Deer Hunting Big Bucks .338 Federal

I was looking for some deer hunting news today, and I found an article I thought people might be intrested in on deer hunting big bucks. I have had several different cartridges over the years in my choices of deer hunting rifles for big bucks and big game.

Some of my favorites are .270, .308, .30-06, .30-30. They all are very good choices in in different situations.  I have taken a lot of whitetails with my Marlin 30-30. There are more and more calibers availible every year.

Check out this article here. It sounds like the .338 may be a very good one for big bucks and whitetails over all.

New calibers/cartridges are always interesting to me, but very few really hit it off big. The .17 has done well. I think the problem with the big bore rifles is that they don’t really feel a vacant need. I’m not sure how this will be a whole lot better than the 30-06.

Ironically, I use a caliber that a lot of people frown on as being too small–the .243. However, I don’t think I have ever lost a deer that I have shot with that caliber. In the end, i think its all about shot placement, not the size of the hole.

I agree, shot placement is critical. I have been thinking about getting a .243.

My friend just sent me a video of some guy shooting a deer from almost 1000 yards with a .338!
I wouldn’t do it, but the guy who did obviously has a lot of training, so he probably could have done it with any rifle. But it was a great shot and a cool video anyway…
    Enjoyed your site.

1000 yard shot is awesome! I work with a guy who was a sniper in Vietnam, he told me about some incredible shots. Thanks, Jeff
