I hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend. I had one of the best 4th of July’s ever. My son had his first birthday on July 3rd, and we had a big party for him. He had a blast playing in the cake. He had to show everyone how he can almost walk now. His brother helped him open all of his gifts.
Then on Saturday, my father and I took my two year old son fishing for the first time. He caught his first fish and he got so excited, but I don’t think he got as excited as my dad and I. I got it on video tape and we had a blast.
We had just got on the dock and started getting a few rods out when my son got the first fish on, it was total chaos, I was trying to get the video camera to get it on film my dad had to catch the rod to keep it from going in the lake, my son dropped his sun glasses and one of the lenses popped out, and he was jumping up and down yelling I got one, he had a good fight winding in a nice bluegill, and we all were happy!
We took pictures and made memories that I will always cherish. We caught a nice stringer full of bream and catfish, and my son loved it.
If you get a chance to take a child fishing do it. It is great for kids to get out in the great outdoors and be able to experience fishing and hunting at an early age, and create an interest that hopefully they will be able to learn and enjoy for a lifetime. I was fortunate to have been able to hunt and fish early in my childhood, and still love the outdoors today.
It was a very good weekend for me. One that I will never forget.

What an awesome weekend! You must be one proud Pappa! You’re so fortunate to share these times with your sons – and your father! They’re memories that you – and they – will take with them for the rest of y’alls lives.

Sounds like a great day. My father-in-law has a private pond and my brother’s kids just love fishing in that (as do I). It is definitely important to get them involved at a young age. I can’t wait to get my new arrival (in October) out for her first fishing trip.
