Yesterday afternoon I was able to go deer hunting. I had one blowing at me and then I saw 4 does and then a small 6-point chasing them, but no big bucks. I have had a tough year of deer hunting so far and it is just about over for me. We are going back to Georgia and by the time we get back to Kansas the season will be over. I may get to go one last time this afternoon or in the morning and that will be it for my season. Even though I haven’t harvested a whitetail this year I have enjoyed being out there getting after those big bucks. I just enjoy being in the great outdoors deer hunting.

The other morning I was headed home from work at 5:30 a.m. when I saw a police car pulled over with his lights on. So I slowed down and when I got closer I saw a car in front of the police car and the front end was wrecked pretty bad, so I started scanning the area for a whitetail and as I passed the scene I saw an antler sticking up out of the grass. So I went down and turned around and went back by and I saw the rack better this time and it was huge. This area is known for big bucks. So I’m thinking I wonder if I could get the whitetail?

So I decide to stop and ask. I pulled up behind the police car and got out and asked him if I could have the monster, and he said sure. He gave me a special tag to put on it and helped me load it. It was in the twenties when i got home so I went to bed and when I got up I took pictures and field dressed him and was able to get two good hams and the tenderloins. I was surprised how good of shape the big bucks rack was in, it only had a scratch on the back side from being hit.

We have a huge corn field in our back yard and it runs all the way to the paved road where he was hit, less than a mile from our house. So this huge trophy was coming from our backyard. I scored the buck unofficially at 158.25 gross and 148.5 net. I think one day I will have the rack European mounted, it is beautiful. He was very big and though I didn’t weigh him I know he was well over 200 pounds. When I cleaned him he was full of corn and beans. He was eating good that’s for sure. His tarsal glands were dark but not like some I have seen during the full rut. Anyway I was glad to get this trophy , I hate to see them get hit by a car, I would have rather have gotten him with my bow. He could have been that Pope & Young I am in search of.
