Now is the time of year to get out and start shed hunting. The big bucks should be dropping their antlers very soon if they haven’t already. I haven’t been able to get out shed hunting yet but plan on it soon. Getting out shed hunting is fun and a great time to do some post season scouting.
I like to look for old rub lines, scrapes, feeding and bedding areas. A great place to start looking for antlers on your deer hunting property is feeding areas and trails leading to and from bedding areas and feeding areas. Finding a big antler or antlers is awesome and if you can harvest one of the big bucks that you have found his antlers is really cool. I would like to get a monster mounted with his sheds on the plaque that would be awesome. So get out and find some bone it is good exercise and a great way to scout and pattern a big buck.
Also March is a great time to start getting ready for next years deer hunting.
Preparing Hunting Property
There are some things that you can do now to improve your deer hunting property for the upcoming season. You can fertilize fruit trees or oak trees and honeysuckle. You can put out mineral salt and blocks. To establish a good mineral/salt lick area dig a hole about 36″ in diameter and about 18″ deep. Mix a 25 lb bag of mineral/salt mixture and an equal amount of soil and rake into the hole and then put a mineral block on top of it. You can also plant cool season reseeding annual and/or perennial mixtures for whitetails. Now is also the time of year to control burn. You can also fertilize existing food plots. You can even cut shooting lanes for you stands. I am already looking forward to a successful upcoming season and I am going to start getting ready for it now. I am going to get 3 25lb bags of salt/minerals and some mineral/salt blocks to go ahead and put out. I’ going to do some shed hunting and post season scouting while I’m at it. I’m going to check my trail cameras regularly that I have out all season. I also plan on planting some food plots this year. I am already pumped to get after some monster whitetails this year. I plan on being more prepared this year than I have been in a long time. I have hunted in Kansas two years now and this past season was a lot better than the first season I hunted here. I came so close to getting a huge whitetail this year and I am more determined than ever to make it happen.
