Well folks sorry for the long delay between post. We are finally getting settled here in Kansas in our new home. It has been a very busy last two months for my family and I. I started my new job a few weeks ago and it is going well. I came out here before my family and found us a place to live and then brought my family out. We found a nice farm house on 80 acres surrounded by corn.

From the front porch of our house in Kansas

If you are like me you can’t wait to go deer hunting. I am in deer hunting heaven. There are some really big bucks in the area, and plenty of corn and soybeans for them to eat. Kansas is absolutely beautiful. I haven’t been all over the state but where we live is gorgeous. I also found a public hunting area about 30 minutes away that is over 9,000 acres. I also found 341 acres of public hunting about 4 miles from my house. Also in Kansas they have what they call walk in hunting access areas. They pay farmers to let you hunt on their land. I haven’t checked any of the areas out yet but you can bet that I will. I am trying to get my drivers license switched over from Georgia to Kansas but I have to have an original birth certificate which I can’t find and am having to jump through hoops to get from the state. Once I get my license switched over I can get a resident Kansas hunting licence 60 days after that. So it may be the middle to late November before I can hunt here in Kansas. I could fork out some big bucks for a non resident license but don’t think I want to go that route, unless I run across a 150+ buck while out scouting new areas.

I am really pumped about bow hunting in Illinois again this year. We should be right smack dab during the rut and it should make for an exciting week bow hunting in Illinois.

It is good to finally be getting back to some type of routine and I look foward to posting alot more often now. I hope all of you have a very successful deer hunting season. If you can take a child or friend with you you will make memories that will last a lifetime.

I just wanted to let everyone know why I haven’t been posting lately. Last week I received a job transfer offer in Kansas. Considering I have been layed off since they closed the plant I worked for back in September I quickly accepted the offer and must report to work in Kansas on August 10th. We have been packing and had a moving sell, so needless to say it has been a crazy week and a half. I don’t know when I will have a place and be able to get the internet and so forth so it may be a while until I am able to start posting again. I am looking foward to deer hunting in Kansas and I hear there are some really big bucks there. I must admit that I am a little scared about the whole situation. I have lived in Georgia all of my life except when I was in the service, so packing up my family and moving to Kansas in a three week period is a big step for us. I will try to start posting again as soon as possible and until that time take care everyone. Deer season will be here before you know it, big buck country here I come!

He sent me the story to share it here. Congratulations Payton on a fine buck.

It was another hunting trip down in Taylor County Georgia. Me and my dad were following his hunting buddy and long time friend down to his deer camp. We left on Friday afternoon as soon as my dad got home from work. It was a two and a half hour trip down to Taylor County. We got to camp at about 10:00 p.m. We knew as soon as we stepped out of the truck that it was going to be a cold weekend. We found something to eat and then jumped in the bed.

I woke up at 5:30 a.m. and bundled up it was about 16 degrees. We ate breakfast and headed for the woods. My dad’s friend dropped us off at the double ladder stand we were going to hunt and headed to his stand down the road. That morning an 8 point walked by my dad’s friend’s stand. It started off in the opposite direction of our stand so he grunted at it to get it to come our way. I guess he thought that the big boy was after him so he took off towards our stand. We heard him coming and spotted him bolting our way. I threw up my 7mm-08 Remington Model 700 and tried to find him in the cross hairs. It was so thick I couldn’t see anything so I reluctantly clicked my safety back on and watched him walk off. We headed back to camp to eat and get ready for the evening hunt.

After we ate and opened up some more hand warmers we headed back out. I hunted the same stand that I had seen that 8 point that morning and my dad hunted another double ladder stand in some thick pines on the other side of the road. I went all evening without seeing anything. My dad saw a doe and told me that that was the spot he wanted us to hunt the next morning. I was beginning to wonder if I was ever going to get a shot at a deer. We grilled out steaks that night and headed to bed.

I woke up the next morning and decided that today was the day. I bundled up and my dad and I walked to the stand where he had seen the doe the evening before. After a long walk through the thick pines we got set up in the stand and I knew that this was the place where I was going to kill my first deer. I hunted hard all morning and about 7:43 my dad told me to get ready that here comes a deer. I spotted the movement and found him in my cross hairs. My dad couldn’t see him but I told him that I had him in my cross hairs. I took my safety off and shot. He tucked and ran. My dad asked me if I hit him and I told him that I made a good shot. My dad’s friend called on the radio and asked if that was me that shot and we told him that I had shot a buck. He told us to hunt for about thirty more minutes and let him see if he could kill one.

I was so anxious by the time he got to us. We climbed down and went to where I shot him to look for blood. We looked for fifteen minutes and couldn’t find a drop of blood. All we found was some cut hair and some kicked up pine straw. I knew I made a good shot but I was beginning to second guess myself. My dad’s friend told me and my dad to check some thick stuff and he went back to where we found some hair. He told us that he might have headed for a gully that was close by. He called on the radio and told us that he had found him. The deer headed for the gully just like he thought he would. My deer had run 80 yards. I was so excited when I found out that he was down. We walked to where he was and I couldn’t believe it-I had shot an 8 pointer. I had made a good shot right behind the shoulder he was quartering on us so it exited a little far back on the other side. We back tracked him and he didn’t start bleeding until right before where we found him. I was so happy I had finally killed my first deer.

Can you imagine being the lucky hunter harvesting a world record deer? We all dream about one day harvesting a trophy buck deer hunting. Heck most of us would love just to see a big deer. Every year many hunters harvest big bucks. Just think what it would be like taking a world record deer hunting. These days it probably change your whole life if you were fortunate enough to do that. I have heard of hunters taking big bucks and then getting many different lucrative offers to put the story on TV hunting shows, in magazines, or advertising products such as scents, bows, guns, calls, and many other items, and sharing your story about the deer. But imagine the way your life would change if you harvested the biggest typical or non typical buck in the world. I imagine for the most part it would be a positive thing to happen for someone, but I also think it could have it’s negative aspects as well.

Recently I heard about a humongous whitetail harvested in Buffalo County Wisconsin, that is a potential world record deer. Click on the link to see the whole story and click on this link here to see some really cool footage of the huge whitetail caught on tape, before he was harvested, by an outfitter that saw the whitetail while driving from one property to another. I guess we will find out after the 60 day drying period for big bucks to be officially scored. I imagine the man’s life has been kind of crazy since he took the whitetail. I bet his phone is ringing off the hook!

I am going on a hunt this Tuesday morning, and I am planning on taking my camera and camcorder to get some good footage to share with everyone. It has been rainy this weekend and is supposed to rain tomorrow then Tuesday is supposed to be nice and cold. So hopefully the weather will get the big boys moving again. Also, the does that were not bred during the first estrous cycle should be coming back in heat soon, and that should get the monsters back on the prowl again. Our food plots are looking really good and we are seeing quite a few whitetails using them. The later it gets during the season the more attractive they seem to be, since the other food sources become less abundant. The great thing about having food plots is that they provide year round nutrition for the herd when other food sources diminish.

The other day I did a post about deer hunting big bucks on small tracts of property. And I had mentioned a buck that I took on a fourteen acre tract of land. I’ve been wanting to put a post in the big bucks profiles, of the Gwinnett county buck. So I am going to profile my special Gwinnett county buck. It’s one of my biggest bucks and it is probably the most special.

My father bought fourteen acres in Gwinnett county in Georgia years ago. We used to go hunting a lot on it. It was a prime piece of property for deer hunting big bucks. It’s where I took my first deer. My father built a house on the property and it was really nice. There were some great spots on it to go deer hunting. I called my dad on a Sunday night to see if he had seen any deer when he went deer hunting during the weekend. He said he was in a stand on the creek that backs up to I-85. It’s a natural funnel. A pasture comes down to a strip of woods that goes up a hill to the interstate. It was just a prime spot for deer hunting big bucks. There were a lot of deer rubs and scrapes in the area. You could tell there were some big bucks using the area. I couldn’t go deer hunting that weekend, so my dad was hunting by his self. A big trophy buck came down the hill from behind him and saw my dad before he saw the buck. It was getting out of town in a hurry by the time dad saw it. It was full rut and the big bucks were on the move. We had been hunting almost every weekend. And had seen a lot of whitetails. So after he told me this I had the fever bad. I was fighting a cold but I wanted to get in the woods. I called a good friend of mine and asked him if he wanted to go with me. He said yes. So the next morning we were on our way. I told my friend that the bucks were in rut and I would be surprised if we didn’t see some action. My dad had seen several bucks. I put him in his stand and I went and got in the stand near the highway. It was cold and I was sick. I was trying not to cough the whole hunt. I didn’t see anything all morning. But about 9:00am I started calling with a grunt call persistently. The traffic going by made it hard to hear anything walking in the woods. I was determined, several times I wanted to end the hunt, but I kept hitting that grunt call persistently. Then it was about 10:30am and I heard something over my right shoulder. It was him, the big buck my dad had described to me that had seen him first. He saw me about the time I saw him. My gun was turned the wrong way when I first heard him. So as I turned to see what it was I swung my gun around and put it up immediately. He was about to bolt when my Winchester model 100 308 went off. I could tell he was hurt by the way he ran off. I went back to my dads house and my friend was asleep in the car. We went to where I shot him and found blood and hair. We followed the trail a little ways then we found some bone. But the blood trail ran out. I had an idea. My dad had a bird dog and a German shepherd. We went and got them. I figured the bird dog would be the best tracking dog. But when we got to the last place we found blood the bird dog looked lost but the German Shepherd was excited and ready to get that deer. I quickly gave my buddy the bird dog and I got Black Jack. Black Jack smelled the trophy and was pulling me down the same trail the buck had taken. Then he yanked the leash out of my hand and was running full speed. I couldn’t keep up. Then I heard Black Jack start barking like crazy. I ran to where he was and there is the big buck and Black Jack in a stand off. I quickly finished him off. I was so excited. It was my biggest buck ever. The buck had lost a lot of weight during the rut so he didn’t have a lot of fat on him. If my dad wouldn’t have told me about seeing that big buck, I don’t know if I would have gotten him. I am extremely proud of him. He will always be special to me.

Have you ever been hunting in a kudzu field? The deer really like kudzu. If you like deer hunting big bucks you may like this story. Just the other day my father in law Bill called me and said he had found a photo copy of a picture he had taken on his hunting property. Right in his own back yard. He said he thought this would be a great story for Deer Hunting Big Bucks. There have been several big bucks taken deer hunting on this property. His grandson had told him he thought he heard two big bucks fighting back there. It’s several acres back there with part of it being a kudzu field. I’ve been deer hunting back there and it just looks like there would be some big bucks living there. Bill went to see what the commotion was back there that his grandson had heard. It’s pretty thick back there. As Bill was walking down through there, he spotted a deer leg. Then he spotted the deer. In all his years of deer hunting he hadn’t seen anything quite like this. It was a trophy buck that had gotten his rack entangled in the kudzu. He must have freaked out and broke his own neck trying to get loose. It was just a freak accident. Bill went and got his camera and took some pictures. He can’t find the original pictures or negatives but he did find a photo copy. The quality isn’t very good. If he locates the original photos I’ll update this post. It’s like when two bucks get locked up and can’t get apart. Except it’s just one buck. Bill eventually cut the buck out of the kudzu and cut off the antlers. If you are like me, and like deer hunting big bucks, you sure hate to see a big buck die like this, especially if it’s one you are hunting in your own backyard.
