I arrived at the WIHA (Walk in hunting access)hunting land well before daylight and it was raining of and on. But with all the big bucks being seen around our house lately I knew the rut was in full swing and a little rain wasn’t going to stop me from deer hunting. As I got to the area I wanted to hunt and picked out a good tree to get up in low and behold it started snowing like crazy. Now being from Georgia I have never been deer hunting in the snow but have always wanted to. As I am going up the tree I look over and there is one of the biggest most worn out rubs I have ever seen. Talk about being pumped up. It’s snowing like crazy the rut is in full swing and I am hunting over one of the biggest rubs if not the biggest I have ever seen on TV or in person. I set up in a hardwood draw with a creek running parallel to it and corn fields on two sides as far as you can see and on one end was a big hill of hardwoods that came down to the hardwoods I was hunting. I would have bet you $500 I would have seen some deer. I stayed in the stand as long as I could but didn’t see any deer. Not having any experience hunting in the snow I thought I was prepared but both pairs of my gloves got soaking wet and as hard as I tried with hands warmers I could not get my hands dry and when I couldn’t feel my hands I had to come out of the stand. I was hard to do with frozen hands I couldn’t get the pins out of my deer stand to take it off of the tree. After several attempts I finally got the out though. I took some footage of the snow and the big rubs I wanted to share with you here. I wish I had some footage of some big bucks but I didn’t see any. When I got down out of my stand I walked about fifty yards up a hill and there are fresh deer tracks in the snow. I cannot figure how in the world I didn’t see those deer. I had been rattling and calling and all I can figure is they snuck in on me and busted me and snuck back out. Oh well next time I will be ready!

It looks like the big bucks are on the move back in Georgia. Our newest Pro-Staff member Troy put a big Putnam county 8 pointer down Saturday evening in the edge of some hardwoods and a big clear-cut. Troy said the buck was on the move about thirty minutes before dark and he had to make a quick shot which resulted in his eye being dotted by the scope on his 30-06. Troy said he didn’t even feel it! That’s what I’m talking about Troy, you wear that wound proudly!

If you love deer hunting as much as I do, this is probably your favorite time of the year. Last week I picked up my wife and kids at the airport and on the way home at 3:30pm my wife starts saying something but can’t get the words out so I look over to see what the commotion is about and there is a big buck running from a cornfield across a pasture to a patch of woods. He was a big old corn fed buck with a very nice rack. I only saw him for a split second but he was nice. Right then I knew it was time to go deer hunting. Then driving home from work I saw a truck pulled over and there in the road was a very nice buck the man had just hit with his truck.

This is the public land WIHA (walk in hunting access) where I am deer hunting big bucks in Kansas.

Then the next day I get a text message with a 190″ buck that my cousins friend harvested in Kansas. A 190″ class buck with a bow now that’s impressive! Then yesterday as I am driving to where I was going to hunt I see a nice 130″-140″ buck crossing a cut cornfield right in front of my truck. Needless to say I was pumped! So the big bucks are definitely on the move here in Kansas. Also my father shot a very, very nice buck back in Georgia but could not find him. To say he is very disappointed would be an understatement. He even called in a tracking dog to help look for it but they never found him. I feel so bad for my dad he is such a good man and I wish he had been able to find the big buck. Hopefully he still will find him.

How about where you hunt? Hows the deer hunting? Are the big bucks on the move yet? Some friends and I are heading bow hunting in Illinois this week and I am pumped about it. Hopefully we will get some nice cold weather and maybe one of us will be able to harvest a big swollen neck Illinois trophy whitetail. I cant wait! If it is as much fun as last year it will be a blast! I hope to get a nice buck on film this year to share with everyone, hopefully we can make it happen.

I also am very excited about an opportunity to team up with a great company and possibly be on their Pro-Staff. I received a follow up on a application I put in and they wanted me to do the second step of the process so hopefully things will workout and we can team up. I don’t want to jinx myself so I’ll leave it at that. I hope you all are having a very good deer season, and remember to take a child or friend hunting with you. You will make memories that will last a lifetime.

I like to start in food plots and on trails, and near feeders and trails leading to and from them.
It will soon be time to plant those spring and summer food plots. Have you gotten your soil samples yet? I have seen plots that barely produced at all, but when soil samples were done and the correct amount of lime put out they showed great improvement and were lush and green! Get out and get those soil samples if you want to be sitting over a nice green plot come deer season.

Now that spring is here the does will be giving birth soon. After a gestation period of about 202 days. Some will give birth to twins usually one buck and one doe. During the summer bucks and does will be busy eating alot of their favorite foods in their region. Sometimes eating 10 to 12 pounds of food a day. During the summer they eat a lot of grasses, clover, alfalfa, and berries. As the days become longer the incresed daylight will cause a change in the bucks growth hormones causing his antlers to grow. I can’t wait to see the big bucks start growing their antlers.

I found a great story about the new Kentucky state record non-typical. Here you can read about the Kentucky record deer.

One of my favorite blogs is Outdoor Life’s Big Buckzone. Travis Faulkner has a lot of great stories and articles on there, and he is from Kentucky, and he definitely knows what he’s doing when it comes to hunting big mature whitetail bucks in Kentucky. And he seems like such a great down to earth good ole southern man. So be sure to go to my blog roll and check out the Big Buckzone.

There are many different public deer hunting opportunities in Kentucky. I found a great link to them here. It is a great place to research all the different ones and see which one you would be interested in. I have been wanting to hunt the Land between the Lakes public hunting area. With 107,594 acres of prime deer habitat, and 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline, and abundant whitetail deer, it sounds like a great place to take a trophy buck. They offer quota hunts for firearms and archery and crossbow hunts. If you are interested in a Public hunt in Kentucky be sure to check out the above link and I think it will be very helpful to you.

I also found a video of a huge buck harvested in Kentucky that you will enjoy. Check out this huge buck harvested by an Amish man while hunting on the ground. It is a unbelievable buck that is probably the second or third largest non-typical buck ever harvested in Kentucky.

I am currently trying to get transferred to Kentucky with my job and after reading this article I think you will understand why.

If you haven’t you might want to try it sometime while deer hunting. Several years back I started hearing and reading a lot of stories about some really nice bucks being killed on Flint River WMA down in south Georgia. So some friends and I decided we would put in for a quota hunt and go see for our selves. Apparently we were not the only ones hearing about all of those big bucks. It took us three years to be drawn for a hunt on Flint River WMA.

Flint River WMA has many big bucks like this one that was harvested on December 5,1997.

But it was definitely worth the wait.

We arrived on Thursday December 3 around lunch and immediately unpacked and headed out to do some scouting. We located some good places to hunt and saw some deer in the process. It was my first time deer hunting on the Flint River WMA and I was pumped.

The first day I got in a tree on the edge of a big swamp and I saw several deer and some wild hogs but no big bucks. Then on Saturday morning it was very cold and I hunted hard all morning and was supposed to meet my buddy Steve for lunch around noon. So I got down and decide to still hunt dowm a road through the planted pines. As I eased down the road I would look down each row of pines carefully surveying each row for any sign of a big boy. I was slipping along slowly when I notice what looked like two eyes looking at me from about 60 yards down a row of pines that was very dark form the canopy of pines. I eased my scope up to get better look and I spotted the silhouette of a big trophy buck laying in a dry spot in the row of pines. I immediately knew it was a very nice buck and found his shoulder in my scope and gently squeezed the trigger. The buck ran about thirty yards and expired. The three year wait was well worth it. I was pumped! He was a very nice main frame 8 pointer with a kicker off his let main beam. He had a little bit of pie bald in him and had white patches on both of his legs that were made him very unique and was a beautiful buck.

If you get a chance I would definitely recommend hunting on the Flint River. You will have a chance to get a buck of a lifetime.

He sent me the story to share it here. Congratulations Payton on a fine buck.

It was another hunting trip down in Taylor County Georgia. Me and my dad were following his hunting buddy and long time friend down to his deer camp. We left on Friday afternoon as soon as my dad got home from work. It was a two and a half hour trip down to Taylor County. We got to camp at about 10:00 p.m. We knew as soon as we stepped out of the truck that it was going to be a cold weekend. We found something to eat and then jumped in the bed.

I woke up at 5:30 a.m. and bundled up it was about 16 degrees. We ate breakfast and headed for the woods. My dad’s friend dropped us off at the double ladder stand we were going to hunt and headed to his stand down the road. That morning an 8 point walked by my dad’s friend’s stand. It started off in the opposite direction of our stand so he grunted at it to get it to come our way. I guess he thought that the big boy was after him so he took off towards our stand. We heard him coming and spotted him bolting our way. I threw up my 7mm-08 Remington Model 700 and tried to find him in the cross hairs. It was so thick I couldn’t see anything so I reluctantly clicked my safety back on and watched him walk off. We headed back to camp to eat and get ready for the evening hunt.

After we ate and opened up some more hand warmers we headed back out. I hunted the same stand that I had seen that 8 point that morning and my dad hunted another double ladder stand in some thick pines on the other side of the road. I went all evening without seeing anything. My dad saw a doe and told me that that was the spot he wanted us to hunt the next morning. I was beginning to wonder if I was ever going to get a shot at a deer. We grilled out steaks that night and headed to bed.

I woke up the next morning and decided that today was the day. I bundled up and my dad and I walked to the stand where he had seen the doe the evening before. After a long walk through the thick pines we got set up in the stand and I knew that this was the place where I was going to kill my first deer. I hunted hard all morning and about 7:43 my dad told me to get ready that here comes a deer. I spotted the movement and found him in my cross hairs. My dad couldn’t see him but I told him that I had him in my cross hairs. I took my safety off and shot. He tucked and ran. My dad asked me if I hit him and I told him that I made a good shot. My dad’s friend called on the radio and asked if that was me that shot and we told him that I had shot a buck. He told us to hunt for about thirty more minutes and let him see if he could kill one.

I was so anxious by the time he got to us. We climbed down and went to where I shot him to look for blood. We looked for fifteen minutes and couldn’t find a drop of blood. All we found was some cut hair and some kicked up pine straw. I knew I made a good shot but I was beginning to second guess myself. My dad’s friend told me and my dad to check some thick stuff and he went back to where we found some hair. He told us that he might have headed for a gully that was close by. He called on the radio and told us that he had found him. The deer headed for the gully just like he thought he would. My deer had run 80 yards. I was so excited when I found out that he was down. We walked to where he was and I couldn’t believe it-I had shot an 8 pointer. I had made a good shot right behind the shoulder he was quartering on us so it exited a little far back on the other side. We back tracked him and he didn’t start bleeding until right before where we found him. I was so happy I had finally killed my first deer.

With the whitetail rut happening all over the United states I thought I would do some research and see what the rutting activity was like in some other great states. There is not a more exciting time to be hunting than when the deer rut. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and I have always heard about big deer Texas. I have enjoyed watching the different hunting shows through the years, and I have seen some great ones filmed in Texas. One day I hope to be able to go to Texas. The Lone Star State is definitely known for trophy whitetails.

There are two different rutting periods in the Lone Star State: December in the southern part and November in the northern half of the state. The north Texas rutting moon would be Nov. 13. this year and December 12 in South Texas.

Down in South Texas, the big bucks necks are starting to swell as the big boys rut in big deer Texas. Expect the rut in the Brush Country of the famous South Texas to start the last few days of November, but it will probably peak about mid-December as it has done for many years, and some rutting activity will probably continue until the first week of January. Man I would like to be there when the monsters are chasing does. I bet the brush country is an exciting place to be when the big boys go bonkers! I’m getting pumped just thinking about it.

I found a great article on the whitetail rut in big deer Texas. You can see it here. It is very informative and should help you if you are planning on being in Texas when the chasing occurs. Even though I’m not going any time soon it was very interesting to see when and where the peak breeding periods are in the Lone Star State.

The other night my son wanted me to make something out of play dough so I did. The picture below is what we came up with. I ran out of brown so I drew the rest with crayons. I guess I could change careers and become an artist. I know, keep my day job right. My sons and wife liked it.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

I sure would love to. Do you dream about hunting Kentucky? I sure do. Some buddies and I were on our way to a recent bow hunting trip in southern Illinois and we stopped at a sporting goods store in Paducah Kentucky for a few last minute items for deer hunting. I didn’t remember to bring all my supplies hunting. They had some deer on the wall that quickly caught my attention. And now I know, in Kentucky there are definitely some big bucks. I could tell right then and there deer hunting Kentucky supplies hunting dreams. As a matter of fact when we were driving to Illinois, we saw a huge trophy whitetail buck in Kentucky, he was running down the side of a big hardwood ridge, right beside the highway at 9:30 am. That sure got our attention. That monster buck almost caused a pile up on the highway. Kentucky is such a beautiful state. I am hoping to transfer there with my job in the near future.

There are many different public hunting opportunities in Kentucky.

I look forward to one day deer hunting Kentucky big bucks, and see if indeed it supplies hunting dreams.

On one last note I wanted to include a picture of me with my boys with my recent Illinois bow kill. They were proud of their daddy. My oldest son Noah was happy for me and my youngest son Sawyer wasn’t real sure what to think.

Well folks, I am so pumped, yesterday some friends and I applied for a Illinois archery deer hunting permit. I have always wanted to go on a big time deer hunt and it looks like this could be the year that dream becomes a reality. We are planning to go on a bow hunt in late October to early November. Right in the heart of big buck country. I have always wanted to hunt in Illinois, where the chances of getting a world class whitetail are very good. It’s a lottery to get drawn for so hopefully we will get drawn.

If you are wondering why I am so pumped up about hunting in Illinois check out this video, and if you are a deer hunter you will understand.I have already made my self a hunting equipment checklist and I just ordered a new bow that should be here tomorrow. The bow that I have been using for years has been a great one, but it is time for an upgrade. I have never shot a carbon arrow and I just can’t wait to start practicing with my new PSE Stinger. I bought it on-line at huntersfriend.com. They have ready to hunt bow packages that come set up and paper tuned and ready to hunt right out of the package. I just don’t have a lot of spare time, so this is a great deal for someone who doesn’t have the time to get a bow tuned and set up properly. Of course I will need to get in a lot of practice between now and hunting season, which I plan on doing. If you are looking for a good deal on a bow package you can check them out at huntersfriend.com or click here, or call 1-877-410-7811.

A while back I decided to set a deer hunting goal for my self, of harvesting a Pope and Young buck with my bow. Bow hunting in Illinois just might help me acheive that goal. They have some real trophy whitetails there and I just might get a bruiser, you never know. I have been deer hunting twenty seven years and have never been hunting outside of the great state of Georgia. I have taken some real nice bucks in Georgia, but I really hope to get the chance to go bow hunting in Illinois. I am pumped up just thinking about it.

Also I will be moving to Kentucky real soon and I here there is some great hunting there also. I am looking forward to hunting in some of these states that I have only read about and seen on tv. I here there is a lot of corn up that way. I bet those tenderloins taste real good. Not to mention those world class racks.

I have seen them in the Team Realtree videos or some of the great hunting shows on television. Whether it be the Milk River in Montana, or the brush country of south Texas, or Ohio, or Iowa. There are so many great places to go deer hunting, but there’s one place that I would like to go more than any other in the United states, and it’s Pike County, Illinois. It seems like heaven right here on earth to me. With the big bucks that you consistently see taken from there, it just seems like the place I would love to be able to hunt the most. Year after year, you hear about trophy bucks being harvested there.

Pike County, Illinois is located in West Central Illinois, and is the largest county in the state. It consist of over a half a million acres, and is 849 square miles. It is bordered by the Illinois River on the east, and the Mississippi River on the west.

Over half of the county is pasture and cropland which are planted in wheat, corn, soybeans , and alfalfa. Which are not very big compared to some of the other mid-west states crop fields. And a lot of them are separated by creek bottoms, and brushy timber lots and overgrown fields, it’s prime big buck habitat. Plenty of food and water, and plenty of cover. A lot of the land is Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).

With a buck to doe ratio of about 4 to 1 it is a great place to see a lot of mature bucks rutting and chasing does during the rut. It is not uncommon to see three or four bucks chasing one doe. It makes for some great trophy hunting.Rattling, grunting, and using scents, and decoys are very effective ways of taking big mature trophy whitetails in Pike County, Illinois. There is a lot of heavy rutting that takes place during the rut there. So you can use these different tools to your advantage to score on a big boy, if you use them at the right time.

Some people say that the increased hunting pressure has taken a toll on the number of big bucks being taken there, but it is not true, the number of big bucks being harvested there has increased, and is very impressive. Every year there are a number of very large bucks harvested there.

If you still have your doubts how good the hunting is there check this great article here on Outdoor Life’s Big Buck Zone blog.

Although I have never been deer hunting in Illinois you can bet that it is on my wish list of places that I hope to visit and hunt someday. Hopefully, in the very near future. I am looking at going on a bow hunt there soon.
