My friend Patrick went shed hunting in Kansas a couple of weeks ago and found a nice set of sheds. It’s not to late to get out and find those big sheds. Also it’s time to put out lime and fertilizer and get those food plots ready to be planted. Get those soil samples and you will see a big difference in your deer hunting food plots.

I love to see  kids getting out deer hunting. I received a call back in November from my friend Brad who told me about a giant Missouri buck that had been harvested by a fifteen year old boy with a bow. A friend of his Shawn at work had called him and told him about it. Brad asked me if I would like to go over and see the buck and do a story about it on here. I told him I would love to do a story on it. So the next day my son and I drove over and got to meet Taylor and his family and they were kind enough to let me take some video footage of the Pope and Young buck and do a story on here.

The boys name is Taylor and him and his brother Tayden woke up a little late that day but got up and went out and sat on a log together and had been using a doe bleat when this monster buck showed up. Taylor made a great shot and harvested a beautiful once in a lifetime Pope and Young buck. I unofficially scored the deer around 185 gross and 175 net. To harvest a Pope and Young buck of this caliber at fifteen is just awesome. Now I don’t know but I would like to see where Taylor’s buck ranks all-time of whitetails taken by a fifteen year old with a bow. I would think it would rank very well. Just a few days after Taylor harvested his deer with his brother Tayden watching, it was Tayden’s turn with the bow and he took a nice eight point buck. Way to go Taylor and Tayden it looks like the future of deer hunting is in good hands.

Sometimes I think us hunters tend to complicate deer hunting to much with all the products and gadgets and everything and if we would just keep it simple we would probably see more deer. I guess it comes down to being at the right place at the right time.

Congratulations to Taylor and Tayden on such a great story. I’m sure it is a hunt that you two as brothers will cherish and remember for a very long time. Being in the great outdoors making memories like this with family and friends is something that we should fight to keep and be able to pass on the great American heritage of hunting to our kids and theirs. There are many people out there who want to take away our privilege to hunt. We can do more to help protect wildlife and it’s habitat and it starts with us being good stewards of the land and being responsible ethical hunters. This buck wasn't harvested deer hunting, but was hit by a car.

The other morning I was headed home from work at 5:30 a.m. when I saw a police car pulled over with his lights on. So I slowed down and when I got closer I saw a car in front of the police car and the front end was wrecked pretty bad, so I started scanning the area for a whitetail and as I passed the scene I saw an antler sticking up out of the grass. So I went down and turned around and went back by and I saw the rack better this time and it was huge. This area is known for big bucks. So I’m thinking I wonder if I could get the whitetail?

Being a deer hunter, you hate to see a whitetail of this caliber hit by a car.

So I decide to stop and ask. I pulled up behind the police car and got out and asked him if I could have the monster, and he said sure. He gave me a special tag to put on it and helped me load it. It was in the twenties when i got home so I went to bed and when I got up I took pictures and field dressed him and was able to get two good hams and the tenderloins. I was surprised how good of shape the big bucks rack was in, it only had a scratch on the back side from being hit.

Every year many big bucks like this one are hit by cars during the rut.

We have a huge corn field in our back yard and it runs all the way to the paved road where he was hit, less than a mile from our house. So this huge trophy was coming from our backyard. I scored the buck unofficially at 158.25 gross and 148.5 net. I think one day I will have the rack European mounted, it is beautiful. He was very big and though I didn’t weigh him I know he was well over 200 pounds. When I cleaned him he was full of corn and beans. He was eating good that’s for sure. His tarsal glands were dark but not like some I have seen during the full rut. Anyway I was glad to get this trophy , I hate to see them get hit by a car, I would have rather have gotten him with my bow. He could have been that Pope & Young I am in search of.

This is the buck Robert harvested when it was in velvet. Trail cameras can let you know if and how many big bucks are using your deer hunting property.

I just love deer hunting. Seeing all the big deer being taken is awesome. It seems each year the bucks get bigger. I think all the Quality Deer Management is really paying off. The big bucks are on the move in Georgia. Thanks to my buddies back in Georgia for sending me some pictures of some Georgia big bucks.

Robert McDonald harvested this very nice 9 pointer on November 1,2009 deer hunting in Putnam county in Georgia. This buck had been seen on trail camera since July and was know to be quite a wanderer.

This is a trail camera shot of the deer Robert harvested just hours before Robert took him deer hunting a clear-cut.

Robert got in the stand at 4:00 pm on November 1st and at 4:05 the buck showed up in a clear-cut with his nose in the air trying to wind a hot doe. Robert made a sixty yard shot with his 7mm mag and the buck ran to the tree he was in and laid down 20 yards away. Robert said it was an awesome feeling to be able to see horns from the stand and as hard as he tried to hunt till dark he just had to get down and check out his trophy whitetail. I don’t blame you there Robert, I would have had to get down and check him out too!

Robert was deer hunting big bucks in a clear-cut on November 1,2009 in Putnam county in Georgia when he took this very nice 9 pointer.

Congratulations Robert on a great buck! That is awesome to have a nice buck on trail camera and to be able to harvest him. I bet you have already got a spot picked out to hang him on the wall.

Have you had any luck deer hunting this year? I have seen a lot of really nice bucks people have gotten. I have hunted hard this year but don’t have much to show for it. I just thank the good lord for each chance I get to get out in the woods. I’m not even getting close to giving up on that monster yet. I think I’ll go hunting Monday morning before I go to work. That’s if my boss(wife) doesn’t mind.

Well we just returned from Illinois after a long hard week of deer hunting. We were greeted by very warm temperatures once again this year when we arrived in Illinois. We saw very few deer while deer hunting and that seemed to be the sentiment with all the other hunters we talked to as well. The warm weather had the deer moving mainly at night. With the moon being full most of the activity was happening at night. For the second straight year temperatures were in the mid seventies. I saw one deer from the stand on a six day hunt. Talk about frustrating and being mentally and physically drained. You try to keep a positive attitude but I wont lie it was hard to do. We put out two trail cameras and almost all of the activity was at night or right at dark or daybreak.

One morning the temperatures were in the upper forties and I was able to rattle in a nice 10 pointer. He came straight to me across a cow pasture and I thought I had him fooled but as he is coming right to me when he got to about forty yards out he made a right turn for some reason and walked away. I don’t know if he smelled me or what but he knew something wasn’t right. I tried to turn him with every call I had up my sleeve but he wasn’t having it. I grunted, I bleated, I rattled, I snort wheezed you name it. He just slowly walked away. Talk about frustration, I got it on film but trying to film myself while getting ready for a shot I only got some decent footage. Oh well it was a fun week of chasing big bucks. My hunting partner Troy shot a doe on the last day of our hunt but we couldn’t find her. He thinks he hit her a little to far forward and hit her in the shoulder. Even though we didn’t get any big bucks it was a fun week of deer hunting with good friends. I plan on going hunting here in Kansas this weekend so maybe my luck will change for the better. I hope you all are having a great deer season so far. Those bucks are really on the move here in Kansas. I was talking to my supervisor at work the other day about deer hunting and he told me about a guy that had a picture of a monster trophy whitetail that a friend of his had caught on trail camera. So when I saw this guy come by I asked him if I could see the picture of the trophy whitetail. He was a super nice guy and we started talking about deer hunting and he showed me the picture and when I saw it my jaw hit the floor.

This trophy whitetail was caught on trail camera recently in Missouri.

I love talking to someone who is as passionate about deer hunting as I am and I could tell Mike was passionate about whitetails just like I am. I told him I would like to share the pictures here and he said that would be fine. I really appreciate him letting me share these pictures of this amazing buck with everyone.

These trail camera photos clearly show this trophy whitetail is a buck of a lifetime.

These trail camera photos were taken in Missouri and yes he is still out there. The picture quality is not the  best in the world but good enough to know this is a trophy whitetail. If this doesn’t get you fired up for deer season nothing will. What do you think this stud will score? Mike said he thinks around 220+.
