It is that time again the end of another year of deer hunting. It always seems to go so fast. I hope you all had a great year of deer hunting and getting after those big bucks. I had one of the toughest years of deer hunting that I can ever remember. I saw less whitetails this year than any that I can remember. I got a very late start scouting because we moved from Georgia to Kansas in August and I just never seemed to get in the groove of things. I was able to locate some very good sign and hunt on some very promising looking land. But hunting in Georgia all my life I’ve got a thing or two to learn about hunting in Kansas. With all the crop fields in the area I had a hard time locating where the whitetails would be feeding. They could feed in so many different areas and pinpointing the location where they would be feeding was kind of challenging to me not knowing the full landscape of the land. I tried to find the location where I was hunting on Google Earth but could not pin point my exact hunting location. Next year I should be way more prepared and have a better chance at harvesting one of the big bucks that eluded me hunting in Kansas this year. I plan on doing some post season scouting and shed hunting and hopefully I can find some great land to lease or public land to hunt not to far from my house. A lady that we met at our church said I could hunt on her land and told me there is a mountain lion that has been seen on her property on several occasions. I  am not to sure about hunting where there are mountain lions, those things are big and tend to get hungry. Any way it is never to early to start preparing for next year. Now is a great time to do some post season scouting. Although today the temperature is 5 degrees for the high and minus 13 for the low. I think I will hang out by the fire and watch some football today. I know I’m a wuss, but this Georgia boy is just not used to this extreme cold weather. I dealt with it when I was in Germany in the Army, but I was in my twenties then. I’ll be ready next year when it is time to get after those monster whitetails. I can’t wait to see one of these big old Kansas brutes.

A hunting fitness program will improve your overall well being.

By starting a hunting fitness program you will be ready for the upcoming season. It won’t be to much longer and it will be deer season. Every deer season you hear about hunters that suffer heart attacks deer hunting. Deer hunting requires some physical exertion, and sometimes can be down right exhausting. A hunting fitness program can be a lot of fun and make you feel better. We get out of bed sometimes early in the morning with little sleep after working hard all week. We sometimes don’t eat right when at deer camp. I mean your hanging out with your friends cooking steaks, maybe drinking a few beers at night, stay up late by the campfire telling lies and then get up early the next morning with little sleep. There are some things that you can do to improve your health tremendously. And now is a great time to start during the off season, so when deer season rolls around you will be lean and mean and ready for a successful year of deer hunting big bucks. So let’s all do some good for ourselves and do a little off season hunting fitness.

One thing you can do to make you feel better almost immediately is start eating more fruits and vegetables. Fresh fruits and vegetables are best, then frozen, then canned. Eat less red meat and more chicken and fish, baked or broiled, but not fried. Cut back on caffeine, tobacco,sugar and alcohol, with moderation being the key. It is also good to take a multivitamin once a day.

The first thing you can do if you haven’t exercised in a while is go to your doctor and get a physical. Once you start an exercise program you want to start slow and work your way up before doing an intense workout.

Lately I have been jogging about 3-4 times a week. I usually jog about 3.5 miles in about 30 minutes. I love running, nothing makes me feel better than a good jog. Your body actually releases endorphins when you run that give you a high on life feeling. If you can’t jog walk or do some type of cardio exercise that raises your heart rate. They say you want to do some type of cardio that raises your heart rate at least 3-5 times a week for 30 minutes each time.

One thing I have found is that some good up tempo music will really help motivate you when working out or jogging.

Another thing that would be good to get you in shape is some type of resistance training. Lifting weights is a great way to shed the fat and get lean. The lighter weights with more reps will tone your body more and the heavier weights will get you bigger. If you don’t have weights to use you can do push ups and sit ups which I do some along with lifting some weights.

Sleep is also important, but sometimes not easy to come by. 8-10 hours is great, I know were not always able to get it but try to get at least 8 hours when possible.

I’m not gonna sit here and make it sound like I am some fittnes guru because I could do a lot more than I do as far as working out and I always have to really push myself to get off my fat butt and run or workout. My thing is I do pretty good about jogging but I don’t lift as many weights as I would like. And when I do run I get really hungry afterwards and don’t make the best food choices. Cookies and ice cream are my weakness, but I am determined to get in better shape and get ready for a successful season this year. I know if I eat right, exercise, get some sleep, cut back on alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, and sugar I will feel better and probably be a better deer hunter, and will reduce stress and be ready to drag that big trophy buck out of the woods this fall.

When shed hunting a great place to start looking is around food plots and feeders.

I haven’t been able to go shed hunting this year but I would really like to soon. The big bucks should have dropped their antlers already. These are some before and after trail camera pictures I wanted to share with you, of one of the big bucks we have on our deer hunting property.

Trail cameras are a great way to know when the big bucks have shed their antlers on your deer hunting property.

Do you use a trail camera to help you figure out the big bucks on your deer hunting property? When you go shed hunting on your property where do you start out? I like to start in food plots and on trails, and near feeders and trails leading to and from them. Looking for that trophy whitetails rack is another fun part of deer hunting.

It will soon be time to plant those spring and summer food plots. Have you gotten your soil samples yet? Getting soil samples before you plant your spring and summer food plots and applying lime accordingly can improve your spring and summer food plots tremendously. I have seen plots that barely produced at all, but when soil samples were done and the correct amount of lime put out they showed great improvement and were lush and green! Get out and get those soil samples if you want to be sitting over a nice green plot come deer season.

Now that spring is here the does will be giving birth soon. After a gestation period of about 202 days. Some will give birth to twins usually one buck and one doe. During the summer bucks and does will be busy eating alot of their favorite foods in their region. Sometimes eating 10 to 12 pounds of food a day. During the summer they eat a lot of grasses, clover, alfalfa, and berries. As the days become longer the incresed daylight will cause a change in the bucks growth hormones causing his antlers to grow. I can’t wait to see the big bucks start growing their antlers.

Why not enjoy deer hunting year round? Now that spring is upon us it is time to get out and find those big bucks sheds. Getting out in the great outdoors looking for deer sheds can be a lot of fun and a great way to get some much needed exercise. But with turkey season coming up you may want to wear some fluorescent orange while out looking for deer sheds. The big bucks should be shedding their antlers by now. This past weekend we went to one of the great outdoor shows in Perry Georgia. And man their were some big bucks there. They had a lot of big deer whitetail to be specific. I just love seeing the trophy bucks at the hunting shows, from all over the country. This show was mainly for turkey hunters and fisherman but I managed to find some deer hunting booths.

One of the booths we stopped at was West Kentucky Outdoor Adventures and we spoke with David Whitaker. They are a full service outfitter in Western Kentucky and can set you up on a hunt of a lifetime. Is you favorite deer whitetail? The outdoors shows are always fun to go to especially the hunting shows. So if you get a chance to go to one in your area do it. You’ll have a blast! Okay so the weather has been kind of bad and I am getting cabin fever. It has been a while since I have gotten out of the house. So yesterday I decided to do a little online hunting.

I did a post on some public hunting land here in Georgia that is still open to get in  some late season whitetail action. And it looks like I am going to try out one before the season ends. We had planned on going bow hunting in Illinois but our schedules just aren’t working out to be able to do it. So we are switching to plan B and are going to try to do some public hunting in Georgia. Hopefully we will get some good bow hunting action on film to share with everyone. I sure would like to be able to go bow hunting in Illinois one more time this year but Georgia offers some great late season bow hunting on public hunting land as well. Maybe we will get lucky and see some big bucks.I wanted to remind everyone to take a child  hunting or fishing and get them involved in the great outdoors and you will make memories that you and them will cherish forever.

I haven’t been able to go deer hunting the last few days since my two boys have been sick, but I plan on going a few more days before the season closes. I don’t know what I’ll do with myself when the season closes and I can’t go deer hunting. I guess once the season closes is a great time to start preparing for next season. It is a great time to get out scouting for the big bucks. Looking for bedding areas and old rubs and scrapes. Scouting for big bucks is great once the season is over, there is not as much green browse and leaves so the woods don’t seem so thick. The rubs and scrapes are still fairly fresh so you can spot them easier. And you don’t have to worry about bumping your buck out of an area. Any way I started this post to wish everyone a merry Christmas and look at me I end up talking about looking forward to deer hunting big bucks next year. I am already pumped thinking about next season. I plan on doing a lot more bow hunting and filming hunts next year. We are excited about our new adventure over at FoggybottomOutdoors.com. Then on Saturday, my father and I took my two year old son fishing for the first time. He caught his first fish and he got so excited, but I don’t think he got as excited as my dad and I. I got it on video tape and we had a blast. 

We had just got on the dock and started getting a few rods out when my son got the first fish on, it was total chaos, I was trying to get the video camera to get it on film my dad had to catch the rod to keep it from going in the lake, my son dropped his sun glasses and one of the lenses popped out, and he was jumping up and down yelling I got one, he had a good fight winding in a nice bluegill, and we all were happy! We took pictures and made memories that I will always cherish. We caught a nice stringer full of bream and catfish, and my son loved it.

If you get a chance to take a child fishing do it. It is great for kids to get out in the great outdoors and be able to experience fishing and hunting at an early age, and create an interest that hopefully they will be able to learn and enjoy for a lifetime. I was fortunate to have been able to hunt and fish early in my childhood, and still love the outdoors today.   

It was a very good weekend for me. One that I will never forget.

A while back I decided to set a deer hunting goal for my self, of harvesting a Pope and Young buck with my bow. Bow hunting in Illinois just might help me acheive that goal. They have some real trophy whitetails there and I just might get a bruiser, you never know. I have been deer hunting twenty seven years and have never been hunting outside of the great state of Georgia. I have taken some real nice bucks in Georgia, but I really hope to get the chance to go bow hunting in Illinois. I am pumped up just thinking about it.

Also I will be moving to Kentucky real soon and I here there is some great hunting there also. I am looking forward to hunting in some of these states that I have only read about and seen on tv. I here there is a lot of corn up that way. I bet those tenderloins taste real good. Not to mention those world class  racks.
