Now is a great time to get out and do some post season scouting and start looking for some big bucks sheds.

Big bucks like this one should have shed their antlers by now.

Before you know it we will be back out deer hunting.

Now is the time to start looking on your deer hunting property for sheds.

And what a great way to get some exercise and learn more about where the monsters are hanging out on your property. I have heard there are some really nice sheds being found already. And I am getting the itch to get out and and start looking. The big bucks have already started dropping there antlers here in Kansas and Missouri. My buddy sent me some pictures that some friends of his sent him of some very nice sheds. I get fired up seeing the big bucks sheds that are found every year. I read a really cool article in a deer hunting magazine about a place in Missouri that will train your dog or sell you a dog just for finding sheds. It seems some people take their shed hunting pretty serious.

A great place to start looking on your deer hunting property is in the edges of food plots or fields or feeding areas and the trails leading to and from the food plots. Who knows you might find some sheds of that monster you’ve got on trail camera. Just a couple of weeks ago I was headed home from work and saw two very nice whitetails bedded on the side of a hill near the road. Snow was on the ground so it made it easy for me to spot them laying there. I am sure they have shed their antlers by now and I bet they are laying somewhere near where I saw the deer bedded. Finding a trophy whitetails sheds can be an awesome feeling. Then to try to harvest a trophy buck that you actually have found his sheds now that would be really cool.

A hunting map can be an invaluable scouting tool to help pinpoint the best places to look for big bucks.

I don’t know if hunting map is an official term but that is what I call the maps I use for deer hunting.

There are three different ones that really come in handy, topographical maps(topo), aerial photos, and plat maps. My favorite hunting map is the aerial. A hunting map can give you information that can help you figure out the best places to ambush big bucks.

Each type of map gives a little piece of the big puzzle to pinpointing the best location to locate the most dense deer sign and interpret the sign and pick out the best place to get that trophy buck.

Here are some of the advantages of each type of map.

• Topographical (topo) map- The different lines on it allow you to locate valley’s, ridges, and benches on the side of a ridge, also streams, roads, and sometimes buildings. Also a topo outlines in light green where the woods are located.
• Plat map -  Show Rivers, streams, roads, buildings, and the always important property boundaries.

• Aerial photos – Allow you to evaluate not only the deer hunting property where you hunt but the surrounding areas as well. They can help you locate food sources, bedding areas, funnels, travel corridors, fields, wood lots, streams, ravines, and roads.

By using all three of these maps you can pinpoint places that you want to focus on scouting when you actually get out in the field. By studying these maps and using the information you gather from each one you can really cut your scouting time in the field quite a bit because you can locate places that are likely to have dense deer sign before you ever step foot on the property. Of course there are some places that you might overlook on the maps that you might not find without getting out and walking the deer hunting property.

A hunting map of your deer hunting property can help you figure out that trophy whitetail.

The closer it gets to deer season the less walking you want to do on the property. The less human activity there is on your deer hunting property the more sense of security the deer will have. Those big bucks didn’t get big by being stupid they get real smart when human pressure increases.

A trail camera is a handy scouting tool.

Deer season will be here before you know it and a trail camera can be a great way to learn so much valuable information for your upcoming deer season. Some of the best places to setup a trail camera are on food plots or feeders or trails leading to and from them. Having the advantage of putting out several trail cameras can tell you a lot about your deer hunting property. Feeding patterns such as time of day and preferred food choice are some of great information trail cameras can tell you. Also the overall health and deer population of the deer herd using your property.  How many bucks and what age they are and size? Are they shooters, management bucks, or do they need to get older? You have just got to love having trail cameras to help get all of this great information on your hunting areas. They can also tell you a lot about the predators lurking around your deer hunting property. We have had quite a few bobcats and coyotes and they can have an impact on the deer herd if they get to poulated. We think we even saw a black panther roaming around on our deer hunting property. I sure would like to get some pictures of it. They are really neat looking.

Trails cameras can give you valuable information on your deer hunting property.

Have you gotten any good photos of trophy bucks on your property yet? They should be getting bigger everyday! It’s always fun to watch the big bucks grow each year. We have had a huge monster buck on camera for several years now and it is going to be interesting to see what he does this year. He is at the point where we think he might start regressing or even die from old age. He is such a smart mature trophy whitetail and is just absolutely beautiful. He has been the stud on our property for several years now and it will be interesting to see what happens with him this year. I respect him so much he is just a truly awesome creature.

Finding deer sheds can be exciting.

It’s almost as much fun as actually hunting for deer.

A great place to start hunting for deer sheds is on trails leading to and from food plots.

Finding deer sheds can really get you pumped. I have found several deer sheds through the years but have never found a big bucks antlers. I would love to find that big 150″ brutes antlers that we saw on trail camera all year but was to smart for all of us on our club. We have had him on trail camera for several years now and he has only been seen in the woods while we were hunting for deer a couple of times. We have never even found one of his antlers either. But this year I plan on looking hard for his rack when he drops it. We’ll see what happens but I am looking forward to hunting for deer sanctuaries where he might drop that beautiful big rack. I would love to get my hands on that thing, although sometime near the end of the season he broke his main beam off just above his G2. I don’t know how it happened. Maybe fighting with one of the other trophy whitetails on our property. From what I have heard and read this season was a little tough spotting big bucks here in Georgia, due to the huge acorn crop the deer didn’t have to travel far to find food, and the full moon during the peak of the rut didn’t seem to help much either.

Any way finding a big boys huge rack can really motivate you to prepare for next season even harder, and make you more determined to figure him out and harvest him next year.

Deer season may be over but now is the time to start getting ready for next season.

There are so many things that you can do to get ready for deer hunting those big bucks this year.

You can see where the forest was control burned, improving the deer hunting habitat.

We are planning on doing a controlled burn on our deer hunting property this Thursday. The conditions are supposed to be just right for our burn and it will help our wildlife habitat tremendously. Always check your local laws and regulations before burning. I plan on doing a post next week on controlled burns and should have some great pictures and information on control burning for you.

Now is a great time to start doing some post season scouting, and I plan on doing a little while we are burning on Thursday. With the leaves off the trees and most of the vegetation gone you can really spot rubs and trails well this time of year.

Post season scouting can be a great way to find big rubs like this one.

You can still even spot old scrapes too. And you don’t have to worry about spooking the big bucks either. You can also search for that bedding area where you think those big bucks were hiding during the season. It’s never to early to start getting ready for next year, and the sooner you start your odds at a big boy will increase. And before to long the bucks will be shedding their antlers and why not scout while doing some shed hunting. It’s fun to be in the great outdoors shed hunting and scouting, and getting a little exercise too. I’m still sticking to my New Years resolution of getting in tip top shape and walking around out in the deer woods is great exorcise. And who knows you might just find that big boys bedding area or a big shed.

I put out a trail camera and hopefully I will get some good shots soon. I did get an email of some trail camera photos taken on our deer hunting property. And the biggest buck that we know of on our property has shed his antlers, and I thought it would be cool to show you some before and after trail camera photographs.

That’s pretty cool isn’t it. Were thinking his antlers may be regressing this year. The age factor probably will start to catch up with him. It sure will be interesting to see. We have seen him on camera for several years now, but he is just to smart, he didn’t get that big being dumb. We think he may have been seen once or twice during deer season, but not really sure.

It is so neat to see the big bucks grow their antlers throughout the year. Technology is a wonderful thing isn’t it? Hopefully, I will be able to get some good shots of some deer growing their antlers this year. I’ll put them on here if I do.
