Now that the deer season is over in most parts of the country , now is a good time to clean your gun. You want to make sure you don’t just put it back in the case after using it all season and forget about it. Cleaning your gun thoroughly is very important. It is easy to use your favorite rifle all season and then put it away after deer season and forget about it. It is important to store it nice and clean to prevent rust. And when deer season rolls around you will have a nice clean gun that works properly and that is safe to shoot.

It is important to clean your gun after deer season to prevent rust and ensure proper operation and safety.

Safety: Don’t ever point any firearm at anyone even if you know that is unloaded. Take out the magazine or clip and clear the chamber, don’t just eject the shell visually check to ensure the chamber is clear. To make sure a firearm is functioning to its specifications you must ensure the firearm is clean. Most malfunctions shotguns, pistols, and rifles have are due to dirty actions and bores. Gun Powder can be corrosive and damage your firearm if not properly cleaned on a regular basis.Read the owner’s manual and go only as far recommended. Always inspect each part of the firearm for wear. Also check for rust,hair-line cracks and signs wear. If you have any doubts take it to a gunsmith.

Steps For Cleaning

Attention: Before doing anything make sure the firearm is unloaded! Only then proceed with cleaning.

1.Clean your firearm from the breach end if possible because you don’t want to get any shavings or debris into the action. Using the proper cleaning kit for your caliber firearm. Assemble the rod and screw the desired tip patch holder in. Pull a patch through the tip and soak it with cleaning solvent.

2. Push the rod with the soaked patch down the barrel to coat the bore. Take off the dirty patch at the other end of the barrel. Wait a few minutes to let the solvent soak into the dirty barrel.

3. Pull the rod back out of the barrel without a patch, then screw in the correct brush to the rod. Soak this brush with solvent and push and pull it up and down the barrel 5 or 6 times. Put the patch tip back on and put a patch on the tip and dip it in solvent and push it down the barrel with a clean patch until the patch comes out clean. Then push a dry clean patch down the barrel to get rid of ant remaining solvent.

4. Then put a few drops of gun oil to a clean patch and push it through to leave a slight coat of oil inside the barrel.

5. With a proper(nylon) brush coated with solvent brush any powder away that you see or any debris away from the action. Once the action is clean use a gun oil to barely coat all parts and surfaces.

6. Reassemble the firearm and wipe any areas you touch with your skin with a soft cloth slightly oiled.

Check and make sure the action is working properly or the bolt. Also make sure the bore is clear of anything before firing.

There is no greater challenge in my opinion than trying to kill a late season mature nocturnal whitetail buck. It can be downright impossible. The number 1 factor that will cause a big buck to become nocturnal is presence of human activity. And for that very reason I like to do my scouting and hang my stands late in the summer and get out of my favorite deer hunting spots and leave them heck alone. I don’t want the whitetails to have a clue that I even exists. The thing I look for when scouting for good deer hunting locations weather it be on foot or using a topo map or aerial photo is the thickest bedding areas I can find. And if I can find a thick bedding area on the edge of a steep elevation that is where they like to bed where they can see downhill in front of them and smell danger from behind them. Then I like to find all potential food and water sources in the area and make a note of when these food and water sources will be available throughout the year.If I find a place like this then I go in on foot and try to locate trails leading to and from the bedding areas to the food and water sources. I try to pay attention to the tracks and see which way they are heading and this can help me figure out what time of day these tracks are being made. If the tracks are leading to the bedding area this trail is probably a great morning spot where you can catch him returning to bed early in the morning. If the tracks are leading away from the bedding area this is probably a great spot to setup in the afternoon when he is leaving his bed to go feed or get water. By paying attention to details you can greatly improve your odds deer hunting. I think the most critical things you can do when you find these trails and decide to hunt them is always have a favorable wind, that is get downwind of these trails with the wind blowing from the bedding area in your face, otherwise you are wasting your time. And you need to be able to approach the location quietly so the buck has no clue you are there. I believe these tips can help you improve you chances of getting a shot a mature nocturnal whitetail buck.

I have been learning about whitetails and the types of vocalizations they use and when and why they use each type. I have been calling whitetails while deer hunting for 31 years and have used calling techniques to help me harvest several nice bucks and have missed a few along the way, but we won’t discuss those. I started learning about and using these calls early in my deer hunting adventures but didn’t really understand what each of them meant and the best times to use each one. I was just using them kind of blindly hoping to get good results. But understanding each call and using them at the right time can improve your odds of getting big bucks in range. Knowing each vocalization whitetails use and when they use them and why can help you tremendously when you are deer hunting.

If you know the three types of vocalizations whitetails use and the variations of each and what they mean you can simulate them at the right times and greatly improve your odds deer hunting.

The three types of whitetail vocalizations are the bleat, the snort, and the grunt and there are several different types of each one. It is important to know what to say when to say it and have the call to say it with.

This is a list of each whitetail vocalization and the different types of each one.

Bleat a. lost contact: “here I am” b.estrous bleat: lets bucks know they are ready to breed c. breeding bellow: bleat with extended bellow tells buck” I am ready to breed and I mean now”

Distress bleat cry throughout year “help”

Grunt a. buck ball: throughout the year like a doe bleat but deeper “here I am” b. tending grunt: during rut loud short grunts saying “come here” c.attention grunt: louder more aggressive best to use during the rut the bucks will usually circle downwind. Softer shorter less aggressive use throughout year made by both bucks and does say “come to me”

Snort a.danger “get out of here” b.snort wheeze: aggressive, tells other bucks “this is my territory and I’ll whip your butt back off”

Learn the basic whitetail vocalizations and the different types of each one and when the best time to use each one and you can greatly improve your odds of calling in and harvesting big bucks on a consistent basis.
