Also the overall health and deer population of the deer herd using your property. How many bucks and what age they are and size? Are they shooters, management bucks, or do they need to get older? You have just got to love having trail cameras to help get all of this great information on your hunting areas. They can also tell you a lot about the predators lurking around your deer hunting property. It is important to store it nice and clean to prevent rust. And when deer season rolls around you will have a nice clean rifle and be ready to do some serious deer hunting. I saw a article I wanted to share with you so when it’s time to go deer hunting next year you will be ready.

Cleaning A Gun Safely

To make sure a firearm is performing to its specifications the owner must make sure the gun is clean. Most problems pistols, shotguns, and rifles encounter are due to dirty bores and actions. Gun Powder is fairly corrosive and can cause damage to your firearm if not taken care of regularly. Below you find some good tips on cleaning your gun safely to help insure your firearm is working properly.

SAFETY FIRST

Make sure you are about to clean an empty pistol or rifle! Remove magazine clips and any ammunition in the chamber. Be absolutely sure the weapon is unloaded! It never hurts to check more than once. BE SURE YOUR GUN IS UNLOADED!

DON’T DISASSEMBLE TOO FAR

Read the owner’s manual of your gun and go only as far as they recommend. If you don’t have an owner’s manual you most likely can download one from the manufacturer’s web site usually at no cost. As a rule you should only need to disassemble as far as to reach the major components that need cleaning that powder and residue will build up due to normal use. Typically the bore, chamber and bolt or action.

EXAMINE THE FIREARM AS YOU BREAK IT DOWN

It’s a good idea to inspect all the parts in the firearm as it’s down for warn components due to normal wear and tare of the gun. You should also check for hair-line cracks, rust and signs of too much wear. If you find anything like this you should take the firearm to a professional gun smith for repairs.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CLEANING YOUR GUN

REMEMBER: CHECK THE CHAMBER FOR ROUNDS BEFORE YOU START!

1.Clean your gun from the breach end if at all possible. If you can’t clean from this end be sure you don’t “push” any debris down into the action of the gun. Be sure to use a muzzle guard to protect the muzzle “tip” from scratches or nicks. If you damage this part of the gun you will loose a lot of accuracy in your shooting.

2. Be sure you use the proper patch holder for the caliber of your weapon. Soak the patch with a factory approved solvent or copper cutter.

3. Run the patch down the barrel to saturate the bore. Remove the dirty patch at the other end of the barrel. If you pull the patch back through the barrel it can fowl the barrel with debris you just pushed out. Let the solvent “stew” a couple of minutes to break up any stubborn lead or carbon that may have built up.

4. Pull the “empty” rod back out of the barrel, then attach the proper brush to the rod. Soak the brush with solvent and run it up and down the barrel 4 or 5 times to scrub the bore. Replace a patch on the rod and soaked in solvent and run it down the barrel with a new patch each time until the patch goes through free of any discoloration. Run a “dry” patch through to remove any remaining solvent. Check the bore for any debris and if necessary clean again.

5. Apply a few drops of quality gun oil to a new patch and run it through the barrel to leave a LIGHT film of oil inside the barrel. This will go a long way to prevent rust during storage.

6. With a nylon gun brush saturated in solvent brush away any powder that has not been burnt or debris away from the action. After the action is clean use a gun oil to LIGHTLY coat all surfaces and moving parts. Do not use too much lubricant because the action may become sticky and hinder the weapon from operating properly. A light coat is all that is needed to prevent rust and help in increasing the life of the weapon.

7.Reassemble the gun making sure you wipe any areas you have touch with your hands with a cloth lightly oiled or a silicone fabric. The acid on your hands from sweat can do a lot of damage to the steal as well as remove any marks you have deposited while handling. It will also have a “new” look to it when you are finished.

REMEMBER TO CHECK THE BORE FOR ANY OBSTRUSTIONS BEFORE YOU FIRE THE GUN!!!

Have fun and be safe.

Well after hours of searching I have found a decent way to edit and download videos without the videos being very short and small. I finally discovered a good way to edit them and get my deer hunting videos on here. After I finally figured it out I was going to download some deer hunting videos to share with you and low and behold if I didn’t drop my camera and messed it up pretty bad. I was all fired up and motivated to get some new ones downloaded and as I was taking a tape out of it the camera slipped out of my hands and landed hard on the floor. Hopefully it wont take to long to send it off and get it fixed. Oh well that’s life.

I know I am already getting fired up for next deer season. I know it’s a long way off but I can’t wait to try and finally get that Pope and Young buck.

To qualify to be a Pope and Young buck the minimum score must be 125".

I’m always fired up about deer hunting. My neighbor took me fishing the other day and I had a great time but it just doesn’t compare to hunting big bucks for me. There is just something about getting after those mature trophy whitetails that gets in your blood. I am looking forward to filming hunts as well, I can’t wait to get some great footage of some rut crazed trophy whitetails going bonkers for some hot does.

I have got the fever for bow hunting pretty bad. Last year I harvested my first mature buck with a bow, bow hunting in Illinois and now not a day goes by I don’t think about getting my first Pope and Young buck. I am waiting to get the ten pointer I harvested bow hunting in Illinois back from the taxidermist to have him officially scored but I think he won’t be a Pope and Young buck, but he is a trophy in my book and I am very blessed to have had the opportunity to harvest such a beautiful animal.

This video is just a remix of some of the footage I shot last deer season.

Advice On Finding Hunting Binoculars

If you are a hunter, you have to have binoculars. Though your eyes may be good and your aim may be wonderful, there are still times when these come in very handy. You may be able to see what is nearby, but wouldn’t it be great to see what might be coming your way long before it comes into the range of normal eye site? My father is a hunter, and he won’t go out into the woods without his hunting binoculars. Last year I bought him a new pair for Christmas because he had had the same pair forever, and he said he really appreciated the new and improved brand that we bought for him.

You can buy hunting binoculars in all types of strength. Some magnify only 20 times, and some go much higher. It depends on where you hunt and what type of game you usually are looking for while out. If you hunt in an area that has a lot of hills and deep forest, you might not need something that is very strong, however, that is up to you. If you hunt in wide open spaces, you definitely want something that is super strong so you can see as far as you need to see.

They also make hunting binoculars that have a feature to keep them steady. If you have ever tried to look at something that is a long ways away by looking through hunting binoculars, you know that things can be quite shaky no matter how steady you try to hold them. There are some that come with protection from this type of shaking. They aren’t perfect, but they can help you stay steady when you are searching far off into the distance.

You can find hunting binoculars in outdoor and sports stores, and you can also find them online. Though you can’t try them out online, you may find better prices that way. You could even go to a store and see what you like, and then see if you can find a better price online. A good set of hunting binoculars is going to be expensive, so taking some time to find the best brand for the best price is always a great idea. Just be sure to find a company that has a return policy if you order online just incase they arrive broken or you don’t get the model you ordered.

What are you favorite deer stands that you like to do your deer hunting out of?

There are so many different good deer stands available on the market today. You’ve got lock-ons, climbers, ladders, tripods, box, blinds etc. I remember when I first started deer hunting years ago we would climb up the limbs of a tree and nail a board across two limbs and sit on it for hours. I don’t see how my dad did it. I’m 41 now and I just don’t think I could do it now, not for very long at least.

My favorite type of deer hunting stand I think is a lock on it is great to get to where you are hunting and be able to climb up very quietly without being detected. But what makes a lock on so good is you can move it around fairly easy. It involves some work but makes them very versatile.

I think the box stand is my least favorite of the deer stands. They are very nice during bad weather, but I don’t know it is just not the way I was brought up hunting. I almost feel separated from the great outdoors when I am in a box stand. I have hunted a box stand quite a bit lately and they are very nice, they just aren’t my favorite way to hunt. I like feeling the breeze against my face.

We have several tri-pod stands on our hunting property and they are very nice. We have two different size tri-pod stands on our club large and small. The large one has enough room to put your backpack and other items in the stand with you but the small one doesn’t it doesn’t have enough room to swivel all the way around. One thing I hate about the tri-pods is they tend to make a lot of unwanted noises. Nothing makes frustrates me more than to get up at 4:00am to go hunting with perfect conditions, it’s the only day you can get a chance to go hunting during the rut which seems to go by so fast, you get in the stand flawlessly, wind direction is in your favor, everything is perfect then you slowly move and the stand makes a noise that sounds like you hit it with a hammer and any buck that has any common sense will not come within a mile of you! So basically you have wasted the day getting out of bed on your only day off because you aren’t seeing any buck on this hunt! Man that makes me mad! Every time it happens I just sit there with a puzzled look on my face trying not to cuss! So for that reason I try not to hunt the tri-pods as much as I used to.

We have several ladder stands on our hunting property as well, and they are very nice. They are fairly easy to move and easy to get in and out of quietly. Ladder stands are one of my favorite ways to hunt.

Portable stands are a great way to be versatile and adjust you location to hot spots where the big bucks are. But you need a little extra time to carry them in and put them on the tree and can be noisy if you are not careful. I just purchased a new portable by Treewalker this year and I love it. I harvested a big 10 pointer bow hunting in Illinois this year out of it.

I used a portable tree stand bow hunting in Illinois, and was able to harvest a nice 10 pointer out of it.

I purchased some cable locks to be able to leave my portables in the woods if need be. It’s ashamed that there are people out there that will take your stands, but that’s life I guess.

What type of stand do you hunt out of? What is your favorite type of stand, and least favorite?

I just love looking at all the different deer rifles. And I have decided that I want at least one of each. I love you honey, if you are reading this. There’s just so many nice one’s to choose from. Why not just get one of each, that way you don’t have to make such a tough decision on which one is best for you.

When you are shopping for deer rifles there are a few things to consider before making a decision on which one to buy. I found a great article that you can look at here, that may help you make your decision on which one would best suit you.

I have had my eye on a Remington Model 700 mountain rifle for quite some time. Even though just last year I bought a Winchester Model 70 7MM WSM that I absolutely love. I shot a nice 9 pointer with it and it did a great job. When I first started deer hunting at 13 years old, I used a Marlin 30-30 lever action that my mother gave me. I’m sure she probably got a good deal, she worked at a gun store. I took a lot of deer with that rifle. I bet there have been as many deer taken with a 30-30 as just about any other rifle.

One of the things you should consider is what type of terrain you will be hunting. Will it be thick brush country, or wide open terrain, or a combination of both , or something else. I found another great article here on calibers for deer. You can check them out and decide which one is best suited for the type of hunting you will be doing. If you are going to be doing a lot of walking you want to consider a light weight rifle. I have Ruger M77 300 WIN Mag and I don’t like carrying that thing to far, it is heavy. But it sure will do the job on a big whitetail. They don’t go far when you hit them with it.

Also, you want to decide if you want a bolt action, auto loading, or lever action. Each one has its own special qualities.

You can see a great article on each here, bolt actions, lever actions, auto loading deer rifles. Once you do some research you can go to a gun store and check out different ones and compare prices and see which one fits your needs, and budget.

No matter which one you choose to get, I think it is our responsibility as hunters to practice with it, and sight it in properly, in order to make a good shot and harvest the animal as quickly and humanely possible.

Also I think that it’s not so much the caliber that matters(maybe at certain distances) but shot placement is critical. I think maybe I contradicted myself, because without the correct caliber, shot placement would be difficult.

I hope this article and the links in it, will be helpful to you , when shopping for a deer rifle.

Every year I look forward to deer hunting big bucks. But if you are like me you are thinking about next season already. I’ve started to get my equipment together and see what I will need to get for next year. One item on my list is a new trail camera. So I thought I would compare some before I make a decision on which one to buy and where.Check out this link here for trail cameras. It has great information on each one and a review. I will probably be ordering one soon. So if any one has any good recommendations let me know. I have one that you load the film in, and have to get developed, but that isn’t very convenient. So it’s time for an upgrade.I know that I definitely would like a trail camera that has a slot for a memory card. Also one that has date and time stamp capabilities.I sure hope to get some great pictures of some big bucks when I get my new camera, and get it set up. It should be real neat to watch a buck grow his rack over the summer. I have seen people in GON that got some great shots of a big Whitetails on a trail camera and then a picture of them with the same buck when they harvested it. That is so cool. Hopefully the camera will give me some much needed information on a trophy buck of a lifetime, so the next time I go deer hunting I can use that information to my advantage getting after ole mossy horns. Trail cameras have really changed the way hunters scout and prepare for deer season.

If you go deer hunting big bucks every year, now’s a good time to make sure you cleaned your deer hunting rifle after the season. I know one year I came home from the last weekend of deer hunting and I unloaded my Chevrolet pickup and put my gear in the storage room in the basement and never even cleaned my gun. It was almost summer before I cleaned it and it had a little rust. I want my rifle to be in tip top shape next year when I get after those big bucks. Walmart has gun cleaning kits at reasonable prices. Just make sure you get the right caliber kit for your gun. They sell a universal kit that works with different calibers. Just make sure you get the correct tips for your caliber. The first thing I do before cleaning my gun is lay out some news papers. It can get messy. I make sure I have some soft clean cotton rags, that I don’t mind getting dirty. The first thing is safety. Always treat a gun as if it is loaded. I don’t care if you know for a fact that you unloaded it the last time you used it. Treat it as if it’s loaded. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction, never at anyone. I know most of you know this, but I can’t preach gun safety enough. Please keep all your guns locked away from children. Use safety locks also.I always take the sling off, and remove the bolt. If you have a bolt action. Most of them are pretty simple. If you don’t know how refer to your owners manual. If you don’t have your manual you can look online if you have internet access. Once you have the bolt out, put the three pieces of the push rod together and put your wire brush on. Saturate the brush with solvent and coat the rod with solvent. Push the rod all the way through the breech end first then when you get the brush out of the other end pull it back through. Do this about ten times. Try not to let the rod touch the bore. Keep it as straight as possible. Take the brush off and attach the cleaning tip. Put a patch on and saturate it with solvent. And push it through and back. Then take off that patch and repeat until you get a clean patch. Then run a clean patch through the bore to remove the solvent. Then clean the gun action or bolt with a rag or patches and solvent. Then wipe dry. I use Q-tips to get those hard to reach spots. Then put gun oil on a rag and wipe down the gun and put a clean patch on and put gun oil on it and run it through the bore. Then wipe down any excess oil. Apply gun oil to all moving parts. And wipe any excess off. And then oil the swivels and where they attach to your gun. They will squeak if you don’t. And oiling them makes them easier to open and close.

Now next season when you get after those big bucks your gun will be ready. All you will have to do is sight it in. I like to clean mine after sighting it in as well. When I was in the United States Army(God Bless our Troops) Cleaning our M-16 was just about the most important thing we did. Having a weapon jam when you need it the most is not something you want to happen. So get those rifles clean boys and girls. Next season will be here before you know it.

I don’t know what I would do without mine. I put all of the things that I will need on an all day deer hunting excursion in mine. You can get some really backpacks with out paying big bucks. They sure come in handy. I thought I would list the items that I put in my backpack. Hopefully this list will be helpful to you when making your list of things to include in yours, or maybe you could tell me something I’m not including that would be helpful to me. When we go deer hunting there are many different items that we need in the field chasing those big bucks. The first thing I want in mine is a survival kit. I ran across a really neat survival kit the other day on a cool blog called http://shedantler.net. Some of the other things I keep in mine area flashlight, water bottle, food(high energy snacks) hand saw, knife, cell phone, parka, extra gloves, extra socks, scents, calls, compass, maps, rangefinder, binoculars, toilet paper, and a plastic bottle to urinate in.The type of backpack I like should be big enough to hold all of my items. It should be camouflage or fluorescent orange, waterproof, and quiet. Check out these backpacks.

Every year we hear about someone being injured falling from a tree stand while deer hunting big bucks. There are some things that you can do yourself to ensure it never happens to you when climbing your deer stand. I myself am very lucky. When I was around fourteen years old I was building a permanet stand in the fork of a tree, in the rain no less, and fell about seven feet and landed in the fork of the tree. I was scouting some land near my dads house and had found signs of some big bucks. I immediately went and got the wood, hammer, and nails, and started building. In a light drizzle I’m up in this tree leaning around nailing, with my feet on the big steel spikes I had driven into the tree. I was making good progress and the in a spit second I fell. I was stuck in the fork of the tree. It knocked the breath out of me and stratched me and bruised me up pretty good. It hurt bad. I was able to get myself down without any further damage and went back to my dads house which was a long way through the woods. I easily could have been paralized that day. I know it was stupid but it happened so fast. I never returned to build that stand. I learned a lesson that day, but I was one of the lucky ones. It could have been much worse. There are some things that you need to think about before climbing in a deer hunting stand.

Always read the instructions and warnings that come with your deer stand. Save them and read them every year before using your stand. Always know the weight limit and never exceed that limit. Use every safety device provided with your deer stand. Wear a fall arrest system full body harness. Single belts and chest straps are not recommended. Inspect your fall arrest for wear or damage. Hunting is fun but can be dangerous. Practice hanging at ground level in your full body harness, before going hunting. To get the feel of it. So you will learn what it is like to have to hang suspended. Use the harness exactly as the directions say. Always let someone know where you are going to be hunting. Hunt with a buddy if at all possible. Although I know for me sometimes the only time I can hunt is by myself. Take a cell phone with you, a walkie talkie, whistle, flashlight. Keep them within reach always while in the tree. Put your stand on the proper tree for your treestand. A healthy tree that is straight and that fits within the size limits of your stand. Use a rope to pull your gear and bow or unloaded gun up. Dont ever climb with anything in your hands. Always lower your gear down on the other side of where you will be climbing down. Know your limits. Don’t be in a hurry when climbing or decending. Don’t extend but about a foot at a time. Make sure the stand has a good bite on the tree on every move. When climbing a ladder always keep three points of contact at all times. Deer hunting big bucks is dedicated to helping teach safety in the woods when hunting. And hopefully you will hunt safe. Below is a picture of a permanet stand that me and some friends built in a Jasper county club. Stands like this are not smart theses days. They are to dangerous.

As I sit here by the fire on this frigid January evening, I was thinking about what it would be like to go deer hunting in Canada. What type of gear would I need? Here in Georgia we get some cold weather during hunting season, but Canada is a different story. I would love to go there hunting some big bucks. Which made me think about hunting equipment. I am in the process of making a list of deer hunting equipment I would like to get for next year. So when next season rolls around I will have the things that I need the most to go deer hunting. And not have to purchase them all right before the season. So here are a few of the things I’ll be hoping to ad to my arsenal of hunting gear. The first thing I am looking at is a new trail camera. I have one that you put the film in(ancient), but I would like to have a digital camera that I could take the memory card out and infrared capability to avoid spooking the deer. And one that has high resolution for quality pictures of big bucks and does. And maybe an occasional raccoon or coyote. And one that is time and date stamped. I’m looking at several different ones comparing features and prices. The next thing I am looking at is either a new bow or a crossbow or a muzzleloader. I really need (would like to have) a new bow. I am still shooting aluminum arrows for gosh sakes. I’ve got a Miles Keller Legend and it’s been a good one but it’s time for an upgrade. I was contemplating getting a crossbow but I think I want the bow. I want to get a Pope and Young buck one day. Those are my big list items. Some of the smaller items are clothing, backpack, etc. My point here is now is a great time to start getting your list together for your hunting gear next year. If you spread it out between now and opening day it won’t hit you in the wallet all at once. And you will be better prepared for that trophy buck next year.
