This buck was hit by a car leaving the property I will be bow hunting this year.

Yesterday I got permission to hunt an awesome piece of property here in Kansas and I am super pumped and ready to go deer hunting. And what makes it even sweeter is it is in my backyard. I have the okay to hunt 80 acres with a 23 acre soybean field that butts up to a 400 acre soybean field and a huge corn field and the 23 acre soybean field has a funnel of hardwoods that comes down to it and I can hunt the hardwoods as well. Last week I spotted four big bucks feeding in the soybeans and even though I couldn’t see them real good because of the distance and it was getting dark, I could tell one of them was going to be a shooter for sure, he was nice. I got them on video but they were so far away the video footage is not real good. Last November my wife and my father-in-law saw a 200 class buck less than a mile from where I’ll be deer hunting, and my neighbor saw a huge big buck in the soybean field in the 23 acre field where I can hunt. Talk about pumped, I cant wait to go deer hunting. Heck I cant even think straight! Ive started a list of things I need to be ready by the start of the season. My list keeps getting longer but my birthday is next week and my beautiful wife said she might get me the stand I’ve been wanting. I put two trail cameras down there on the field already and plan on putting a couple of stands up real soon. I plan on shooting my bow this week also. I love this time of year even if it is hot as heck, deer season and college football are right around the corner. This just might be the year I get that Pope & Young buck I’ve been after. Trail cameras are a great way to watch your big bucks develop and help you figure out the best way to harvest them when it is time to go deer hunting.

Spring has sprung and after about a 200 day gestation period the does should be giving birth about now. Some does from the age of  two and a half if they are healthy and the winter was not to harsh they may have twins. Most of the time one will be a doe and one will be a buck. The fawns will grow quickly during June and July. And as the days become longer the bucks will start growing their new antlers. So now is a great time to get those trail cameras out and watch those trophies develop their antlers all summer long up until bow season starts. It’s fun to see their development at the different stages of growth throughout the year. Have you seen any deer growing their antlers yet? Their antler growth will be slow at first during the spring but once the long days of summer roll around the antler growth will begin to be much more noticeable. So get those trail cameras out and watch those bucks develop throughout the summer months. Trail cameras are a great way to learn more valuable information that can help you get that once in a lifetime buck once deer season rolls around.

I love to see  kids getting out deer hunting. I received a call back in November from my friend Brad who told me about a giant Missouri buck that had been harvested by a fifteen year old boy with a bow. A friend of his Shawn at work had called him and told him about it. Brad asked me if I would like to go over and see the buck and do a story about it on here. I told him I would love to do a story on it. So the next day my son and I drove over and got to meet Taylor and his family and they were kind enough to let me take some video footage of the Pope and Young buck and do a story on here.

The boys name is Taylor and him and his brother Tayden woke up a little late that day but got up and went out and sat on a log together and had been using a doe bleat when this monster buck showed up. Taylor made a great shot and harvested a beautiful once in a lifetime Pope and Young buck. I unofficially scored the deer around 185 gross and 175 net. To harvest a Pope and Young buck of this caliber at fifteen is just awesome. Now I don’t know but I would like to see where Taylor’s buck ranks all-time of whitetails taken by a fifteen year old with a bow. I would think it would rank very well. Just a few days after Taylor harvested his deer with his brother Tayden watching, it was Tayden’s turn with the bow and he took a nice eight point buck. Way to go Taylor and Tayden it looks like the future of deer hunting is in good hands.

Sometimes I think us hunters tend to complicate deer hunting to much with all the products and gadgets and everything and if we would just keep it simple we would probably see more deer. I guess it comes down to being at the right place at the right time.

Congratulations to Taylor and Tayden on such a great story. I’m sure it is a hunt that you two as brothers will cherish and remember for a very long time. Being in the great outdoors making memories like this with family and friends is something that we should fight to keep and be able to pass on the great American heritage of hunting to our kids and theirs. There are many people out there who want to take away our privilege to hunt. We can do more to help protect wildlife and it’s habitat and it starts with us being good stewards of the land and being responsible ethical hunters. This buck wasn't harvested deer hunting, but was hit by a car.

The other morning I was headed home from work at 5:30 a.m. when I saw a police car pulled over with his lights on. So I slowed down and when I got closer I saw a car in front of the police car and the front end was wrecked pretty bad, so I started scanning the area for a whitetail and as I passed the scene I saw an antler sticking up out of the grass. So I went down and turned around and went back by and I saw the rack better this time and it was huge. This area is known for big bucks. So I’m thinking I wonder if I could get the whitetail?

Being a deer hunter, you hate to see a whitetail of this caliber hit by a car.

So I decide to stop and ask. I pulled up behind the police car and got out and asked him if I could have the monster, and he said sure. He gave me a special tag to put on it and helped me load it. It was in the twenties when i got home so I went to bed and when I got up I took pictures and field dressed him and was able to get two good hams and the tenderloins. I was surprised how good of shape the big bucks rack was in, it only had a scratch on the back side from being hit.

Every year many big bucks like this one are hit by cars during the rut.

We have a huge corn field in our back yard and it runs all the way to the paved road where he was hit, less than a mile from our house. So this huge trophy was coming from our backyard. I scored the buck unofficially at 158.25 gross and 148.5 net. I think one day I will have the rack European mounted, it is beautiful. He was very big and though I didn’t weigh him I know he was well over 200 pounds. When I cleaned him he was full of corn and beans. He was eating good that’s for sure. His tarsal glands were dark but not like some I have seen during the full rut. Anyway I was glad to get this trophy , I hate to see them get hit by a car, I would have rather have gotten him with my bow. He could have been that Pope & Young I am in search of.

I am hunting a very nice area with crops, water, cover, and lots of deer sign such as scrapes, rubs, tracks, etc… I know I am hunting a huge buck because the rubs that I have found are huge. I have been hunting a little to close to the crops and have decided to change my hunting strategy. I did a little stealth scouting on my last hunt and have decided to hunt closer to what I believe is the bedding area, a really thick hardwood ridge with a huge grown up CRP field on one side and a huge cornfield on the other. I just haven’t had time to scout this piece of property so this past Sunday I decided to sacrifice some time hunting in the stand to scout and find a better place to hunt. The Kansas rifle season opens this week and hopefully my scouting will pay off. It is somewhat different here than in Georgia in that the Kansas rifle season opens this week and the rut is pretty much over. I believe the full rut in Kansas where I hunt was from Halloween this year to about the 6th or 7th of November, the very time I was bowhunting in Illinois. Oh well one of these days I am going to time the rut just right and get one of these Kansas big bucks. I haven’t given up just yet even though I’d say it is about the bottom of the seventh inning if you know what I mean.

This is the buck Robert harvested when it was in velvet. Trail cameras can let you know if and how many big bucks are using your deer hunting property.

I just love deer hunting. Seeing all the big deer being taken is awesome. It seems each year the bucks get bigger. I think all the Quality Deer Management is really paying off. The big bucks are on the move in Georgia. Thanks to my buddies back in Georgia for sending me some pictures of some Georgia big bucks.

Robert McDonald harvested this very nice 9 pointer on November 1,2009 deer hunting in Putnam county in Georgia. This buck had been seen on trail camera since July and was know to be quite a wanderer.

This is a trail camera shot of the deer Robert harvested just hours before Robert took him deer hunting a clear-cut.

Robert got in the stand at 4:00 pm on November 1st and at 4:05 the buck showed up in a clear-cut with his nose in the air trying to wind a hot doe. Robert made a sixty yard shot with his 7mm mag and the buck ran to the tree he was in and laid down 20 yards away. Robert said it was an awesome feeling to be able to see horns from the stand and as hard as he tried to hunt till dark he just had to get down and check out his trophy whitetail. I don’t blame you there Robert, I would have had to get down and check him out too!

Robert was deer hunting big bucks in a clear-cut on November 1,2009 in Putnam county in Georgia when he took this very nice 9 pointer.

Congratulations Robert on a great buck! That is awesome to have a nice buck on trail camera and to be able to harvest him. I bet you have already got a spot picked out to hang him on the wall.

Have you had any luck deer hunting this year? I have seen a lot of really nice bucks people have gotten. I have hunted hard this year but don’t have much to show for it. I just thank the good lord for each chance I get to get out in the woods. I’m not even getting close to giving up on that monster yet. I think I’ll go hunting Monday morning before I go to work. That’s if my boss(wife) doesn’t mind.

This is Deer Hunting Big Bucks newest Pro-Staff member Troy with a great buck he harvested in Putnam county in Georgia.

It looks like the big bucks are on the move back in Georgia. Our newest Pro-Staff member Troy put a big Putnam county 8 pointer down Saturday evening in the edge of some hardwoods and a big clear-cut. Troy said the buck was on the move about thirty minutes before dark and he had to make a quick shot which resulted in his eye being dotted by the scope on his 30-06. Troy said he didn’t even feel it! That’s what I’m talking about Troy, you wear that wound proudly!

The video I put on here is of a real nice buck that I filmed in Kentucky as I was driving on my way to move to Kansas. I’m driving down the highway and see these big bucks in a field and I pulled over and got out my camcorder and got some footage. I didn’t have a tripod and I had to zoom all the way in to get a decent shot of the buck but without a tripod the footage is very shaky. Oh well you can tell he is a very nice buck. Also I included a little footage of the public land I was hunting in Kansas last weekend.

Also I wanted to thank my good friend Kelley Mayhue from the group “Fishing with Dynamite” I asked him if he would be interested in doing a theme song for our hunting videos and he did a wonderful job on the song and I finally was able to figure out how to include it on a video. Let me know what y’all think about it. I think he did great job and I love the new song! Thanks Kelley I owe you one buddy! Having trail cameras at feeders and food plots is a great way to see the big bucks grow their antlers.

The temperatures were in the upper 80’s but any evening of deer hunting is good to me no matter what the temperature is. I made my way down to the oak flat on the creek, I had to come in the long way to have the wind in my face. I made it to the stand and got situated and waited. I sat there for about an hour when a doe and a fawn came in and had a few acorns and a drink of water and made their way to the clover behind me. I sat there for another hour and a half without seeing so much as a squirrel. I don’t know why but I decided to get out of the stand and do a still hunt up to another clover food plot that was on the way back to my truck. I was about a mile from my truck and the field was back near my truck. The wind was perfect for a still hunt up to that food plot. I made my way slowly up to the field and when I got close there was a big brier patch right on the edge of the corner of the field between me and the field. I eased around the Brier patch very slowly not knowing what was in the food plot. I slowly crept up to the edge of the briar’s and peaked into the plot and low and behold there about twenty yards away stands a 130-140 class 8 pointer quartering away from me. My heart starts pumping like crazy. But I knew I could make that shot. I start to pull my bow back and what I didn’t know was there was another buck standing in the food plot watching me. I was so focused on the Pope and Young buck standing right in front of me I never even saw the other buck. Well as soon as I go to draw this other buck bust me and blows and the deer all run out of the field and get about 60 yards into the woods and start blowing at me. I felt like I wanted to cry. I just had a Pope and Young buck broadside within shooting distance and get busted by a little buck. So I’m frustrated as I watch them run off, and I stand there for a minute the I start walking at a good pace back to my truck because it is close to getting dark, when all of the sudden an even bigger buck  is standing about 60 yards watching me pout back to the truck. He sees me first type of deal, so when I see him he is looking at me hard and bolts. This buck was huge probably a 150 class buck. So now I really want to cry. I’ve got big bucks all around me and and can’t seal the deal. I see two Pope and Young bucks in one evening, and even though I wasn’t able to harvest one, it is an evening of bow hunting I will never forget.  Last year I was able to harvest a potential Pope and Young buck bow hunting in Illinois but think he will fall just short when I get him officially scored. Who knows maybe this year will be the year for that record book trophy whitetail with my bow.

This buck was harvested while still hunting along the Flint River in Dooley county in Georgia. Still hunting is an effective method of deer hunting.

If you haven’t you might want to try it sometime while deer hunting. Several years back I started hearing and reading a lot of stories about some really nice bucks being killed on Flint River WMA down in south Georgia. So some friends and I decided we would put in for a quota hunt and go see for our selves. Apparently  we were not the only ones hearing about all of those big bucks. It took us three years to be drawn for a hunt on Flint River WMA.

But it was definitely worth the wait.

We arrived on Thursday December 3 around lunch and immediately unpacked and headed out to do some scouting. We located some good places to hunt and saw some deer in the process. It was my first time deer hunting on the Flint River WMA and I was pumped.

The first day I got in a tree on the edge of a big swamp and I saw several deer and some wild hogs but no big bucks. Then on Saturday morning it was very cold and I hunted hard all morning and was supposed to meet my buddy Steve for lunch around noon. So I got down and decide to still hunt dowm a road through the planted pines. As I eased down the road I would look down each row of pines carefully surveying each row for any sign of a big boy. I was slipping along slowly when I notice what looked like two eyes looking at me from about 60 yards down a row of pines that was very dark form the canopy of pines. I eased my scope up to get better look and I spotted the silhouette of a big trophy buck laying in a dry spot in the row of pines. I immediately knew it was a very nice buck and found his shoulder in my scope and gently squeezed the trigger. The buck ran about thirty yards and expired. The three year wait was well worth it. I was pumped! He was a very nice main frame 8 pointer with a kicker off his let main beam. He had a little bit of pie bald in him and had white patches on both of his legs that were made him very unique and was a beautiful buck.

If you get a chance I would definitely recommend hunting on the Flint River. You will have a chance to get a buck of a lifetime.

We will be headed down south hunting. The southern zone here in Georgia is open until January 15, the northern zone is already closed. Maybe we see some big bucks and be able to get some whitetail bucks on film. We are going to be filming our hunts. I have never been bow hunting this late in the season and I am pumped. I’m not sure if the big bucks will be in rut. I have heard that the whitetail rut in Alabama kicks into full throttle in January and we will be bow hunting near the Georgia Alabama line. So we hope the whitetail bucks are chasing does. Where I hunt the whitetail rut has been over for quite some time and it would be nice to get in on some late season rut action. I kind of have the feeling that it will be over, but you never know. It is strange to me how the Alabama rut is in January. I have never hunted anywhere that had the big boys going bonkers in January. We’ll see what happens. I hope we get some good hunting footage to share with you. Even if the big boys aren’t chasing does maybe we can locate a good food source the deer are hitting hard and catch a big boy moving between the bedding and feeding areas. One of the big boys I have hanging on my wall I took in south Georgia late in the season. He looked like he had been beaten up pretty bad and was out looking for love. South Georgia has some big deer and I sure would like to get one this late in the season.
