Monster Bucks Make Classic Impressive

Kansas non-typical

200″ Kansas non-typical on display at Kansas Monster Buck Classic.

The annual Monster Buck Classic We Are Kansas deer hunting extravaganza was a great show and yes there were plenty of Kansas monster bucks .

Monster Bucks

The doors opened Friday afternoon at the ExpoCentre in Topeka on January 26, 2014 to a good crowd of avid deer hunters and vendors and it was a fun filled weekend. With the name Monster Buck Classic the deer hunting show lived up to it’s name and there were plenty of big Kansas brutes to be seen.

The Monster buck contest had some awesome entries and there was a new King of Kansas non-typical crowned as Lucas Cochren’s 238 4/8″ King of Kansas Non-Typical fell to the a non-typical buck taken by Cade Hays with a net score of 239 7/8″, a small 1 and 1/8 inches difference! Both are awesome bucks.

There was so many great venders this year with some really cool hunting products. I saw so many good deer hunting products and will definitely be getting a few of them to get ready for next season. One of my favorite products was the INFERNOEPS™ element protection system. It is a cold weather suit that easily makes into a backpack and I tell you I was impressed with all the features. Hopefully I will be able to do a product review on this bad boy, very nice. If you get a chance go by and check out INFERNOTEK.

There were many great seminars and and the headliners were Mike Hunsucker and the Heartland Bowhunter tv show cast, Matt and Jessie Duff co-hosts the popular Friends of NRA television show on the Outdoor Channel, Grant Woods wildlife biologist, Miss Kansas Theresa Vail, Dan Thurston of Drury’s Bow Madness, Torry Cook world champion predator caller, Steven Fuller host of “The Huntin Grounds”, Zac Cooper Little man big dreams, Marian Kincaid of the television reality series “Mudcats”.

It was nice to get to know some of them a little and talk deer hunting. And one of my favorite events was the celebrity bow shoot. Dan Thurston, Matt Duff, Mike Hunsucker and the Heartland Bowhunter crew all did some great shooting with there bows. Matt Duff did great even though he borrowed someone else’s bow to shoot.

We had a great time at the Monster buck Classic this year and look forward to another great show next year. I’m already getting ready for next deer season and plan on doing all I can to get a big Kansas brute with my bow on film and hopefully he’ll be big enough to take one of the King of Kansas crowns. I might as well dream big!

Shed Hunting Snow Monster Buck Classic

shed hunting antler

I found this antler shed hunting.

I need to get back out  shed hunting after all this snow is gone and look for more. I recently got out and did a little shed hunting and was lucky enough to find one nice shed in a cut bean field.

Shed Hunting

I have heard of several really nice sheds being found and I hope to find a few in the next couple of weeks. Last year I didn’t find a single shed and I did a lot of walking. For some reason the properties I hunt don’t seem to have very many sheds every  year. Shed hunting is a lot of fun and it is nice to find sheds of deer that are on the property where you are hunting. I really like seeing pictures of bucks people have taken and they have their previous years sheds in the picture, that is really neat.

Snow Stressful On Deer

Well we have had a ton of snow here in Kansas and we need the moisture bad so it’s a good thing but I know this time of year can be a big stress on deer. Food sources are hard to come by this time of year and the snow makes it really tough on them. I am putting out supplemental feed this time of year to help the deer make it through this really tough stretch of bad weather, they are really coming to the corn this time of year on the property I hunt. Also coyotes can be tough on them this time of year as well. I have seen several coyotes since we’ve had snow, the cold weather makes them have to get out more and find more food to survive, and the weaker deer can be the one’s they go after. I plan on getting after some coyotes as soon as this snow melts. They can really be tough on the deer and I plan on being tough on them and get rid of a few of them.

Kansas Whitetail Hunting Show

A few weeks ago we had a blast at the second annual Monster Buck Classic We Are Kansas deer hunting show. It was an unbelievable show and was a lot of fun. I had planned on taking tons of pictures but I dropped my camera and broke it, so much for getting a lot of great pictures. There were some amazing big bucks entered in the Monster Buck Contest and great vendors and the celebrity hunters were all awesome. I really enjoyed meeting Troy Laundry of Swamp People, he is such a nice man. I also enjoyed talking to Drury Outdoors Dan Thurston he is a great guy and the whole Nock On crew were there and very nice and fun to talk to. It really was an awesome show and we can’t wait until next years show.Monster Buck Classic This is a picture of Dan Thurston and I standing in front of Dan’s neat 1963 Chevrolet van at the Monster Buck Classic.

Don’t forget now is the time to start getting ready for next deer season. It is a great time to put out mineral lick sites for the deer and it will be time to plant those food plots soon.

Deer Season Over

Deer season is over here in Kansas except for an extended firearms season in a small area in northeast Kansas.

Deer Season

Is the deer season over where you hunt? Did you get that big buck you where after? If so send us some pictures to share with our readers. It was a good deer season for us here in Kansas, but it was tough. We were hit by EHD pretty hard and it made for some really tough hunting and there were not a lot of big bucks to be found on the properties that I was hunting. I was still able to film myself shooting a nice buck with a bow but he was no monster by Kansas standards for sure. Hopefully next year will be better but we will just have to wait and see.

The Kansas deer season is over for 2012.

The DHBB forum has had some issues lately but I think we have them fixed and it should be up and running now. If you get a chance stop by and check it out. You can share hero pictures, share trail camera pictures, talk deer hunting. You can also buy or sell hunting equipment, buy or sell video equipment and more. So stop by and check out the DHBB Forum if you get a chance.

We have had two snowstorms the past couple of weeks here in Kansas and this time of year can be tough on whitetails. Food sources become harder and harder to come by, that’s why if you can plant food plots and implement some type of supplemental feeding you can really help the overall health of your deer herd. The more quality food whitetails have during the cold months of winter the better. Does are pregnant and need nutrition for their babies and bucks are trying to recover from the rut and gain back the weight they lost chasing those does. I have been putting out corn for the deer behind my house because there just isn’t much food for them this time of year. Year before last I saw a doe that was staving and freezing to death and it wasn’t pretty.

I plan on doing some coyote hunting in the next couple of weeks, I have seen quite a few lately, I guess the cold snowy weather gets them moving more looking for food. I’m gonna see if I can’t thin them out a little.
