I hope everyone is having a great deer season. I have had an uneventful year of deer hunting. With us moving to Kansas in August with two weeks notice, I have had to kind of wing it as far as finding a place to go deer hunting. I found a great looking piece of public hunting ground about an hour from our house here in Kansas. But with limited time for scouting it has been a tough deer season for me so far. I have seen four deer from the deer stand this year. As far as big bucks go I have seen only one this year that I rattled up in Illinois, and he outsmarted me. I have seen more big bucks while driving in the dark this year than ever before. I have seen a ton of trophy whitetails while driving to or from work or to go hunting.

I am hunting a very nice area with crops, water, cover, and lots of deer sign such as scrapes, rubs, tracks, etc… I know I am hunting a huge buck because the rubs that I have found are huge. I have been hunting a little to close to the crops and have decided to change my hunting strategy. I did a little stealth scouting on my last hunt and have decided to hunt closer to what I believe is the bedding area, a really thick hardwood ridge with a huge grown up CRP field on one side and a huge cornfield on the other. I just haven’t had time to scout this piece of property so this past Sunday I decided to sacrifice some time hunting in the stand to scout and find a better place to hunt. The Kansas rifle season opens this week and hopefully my scouting will pay off. It is somewhat different here than in Georgia in that the Kansas rifle season opens this week and the rut is pretty much over. I believe the full rut in Kansas where I hunt was from Halloween this year to about the 6th or 7th of November, the very time I was bowhunting in Illinois. Oh well one of these days I am going to time the rut just right and get one of these Kansas big bucks. I haven’t given up just yet even though I’d say it is about the bottom of the seventh inning if you know what I mean.

I received some more pictures from my buddies in Georgia with a couple of nice bucks they took back in my home state. Ronnie killed this great buck in Lincoln county in Georgia.

And DHBB Pro-Staff member Troy took another fine Putnam county buck. Congratulations on your bucks guys, I sure miss hunting in Georgia.

I saw this article I thought I would share.

Get The Big Bucks, With The Big Antlers

When hunting for the big bucks, you need to know a few things first. An interesting subject I would like to talk about is Antlers and Antler Growth, and how they are connected to capturing that prize buck.

Once a year, a buck sheds his antlers and soon produces new ones. Starting as early as the middle of March, new antlers will start to take form. Longer, sunny days, and the spring season stimulates hormonal production, beginning the yearly process once again. These outgrowths of the skeletal system compose mainly of calcium, phosphorous, and other minerals, growing from the pedical, atop the skull, and are attached to the base(burr) of the antlers.

Growing antlers are the fastest form of bone growing, and are covered by a soft velvet. The velvet is actually a hair covered membrane, interlaced throughout with blood vessels that transport and deposit the minerals used to build the antlers. These vulnerable antlers continue to grow into September, when the bone finally hardens, and the velvet is rubbed off. While some bucks begin stripping the velvet from their antlers when the blood supply is still active, others may wait until the velvet has completely dried. After the velvet is removed, antlers begin to deteriorate from the effects of sunlight and moisture. Deer will chew on antlers, as will rats, and squirrels.

Nutritional intake plays a huge role in the development of antlers, as does genetics. Once the body has met all of its’ nutritional requirements, the antlers take in additional nutrients. Large quantities of food must be available for optimum antler growth.
Supplemental planting is of some benefit, but to stay healthy and strong, and produce a nice rack, deer need nutritious forage throughout the year.
To ensure an abundance of quality food for the deer to eat, herd numbers must be kept within the carrying capacity of the land, quite often requiring the harvest of antler-less deer. As the first couple of years tend to be spent taking in nutrients to grow the body, the older bucks that need less, will produce larger racks.

Many factors affect the development of antler growth (nutrition, genetics, age, and herd management), and paying close attention to your hunting grounds can increase your chances of catching a trophy buck more and more each year.

I have seen plots that barely produced at all, but when soil samples were done and the correct amount of lime put out they showed great improvement and were lush and green! Get out and get those soil samples if you want to be sitting over a nice green plot come deer season.

Now that spring is here the does will be giving birth soon. After a gestation period of about 202 days. Some will give birth to twins usually one buck and one doe. During the summer bucks and does will be busy eating alot of their favorite foods in their region. Sometimes eating 10 to 12 pounds of food a day. During the summer they eat a lot of grasses, clover, alfalfa, and berries. As the days become longer the incresed daylight will cause a change in the bucks growth hormones causing his antlers to grow. I can’t wait to see the big bucks start growing their antlers.

I found a great story about the new Kentucky state record non-typical. Here you can read about the Kentucky record deer.

One of my favorite blogs is Outdoor Life’s Big Buckzone. Travis Faulkner has a lot of great stories and articles on there, and he is from Kentucky, and he definitely knows what he’s doing when it comes to hunting big mature whitetail bucks in Kentucky. And he seems like such a great down to earth good ole southern man. So be sure to go to my blog roll and check out the Big Buckzone.

There are many different public deer hunting opportunities in Kentucky. I found a great link to them here. It is a great place to research all the different ones and see which one you would be interested in. I have been wanting to hunt the Land between the Lakes public hunting area. With 107,594 acres of prime deer habitat, and 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline, and abundant whitetail deer, it sounds like a great place to take a trophy buck. They offer quota hunts for firearms and archery and crossbow hunts. If you are interested in a Public hunt in Kentucky be sure to check out the above link and I think it will be very helpful to you.

I also found a video of a huge buck harvested in Kentucky that you will enjoy. Check out this huge buck harvested by an Amish man while hunting on the ground. It is a unbelievable buck that is probably the second or third largest non-typical buck ever harvested in Kentucky.

I am currently trying to get transferred to Kentucky with my job and after reading this article I think you will understand why.

Getting out in the great outdoors looking for deer sheds can be a lot of fun and a great way to get some much needed exercise. But with turkey season coming up you may want to wear some fluorescent orange while out looking for deer sheds. The big bucks should be shedding their antlers by now. A great place to start looking is in food plots and on trails leading to and from them. It can be great to find a big boys sheds that you have on trail cameras that you have been deer hunting.

For all of nature spring is time for birth. With a gestation period of around 202 days does will give birth around the end of May or Early June. Does that are 2 1/2 may have twins. If you are serious about quality deer management now is the time to start preparing to plant spring and summer food plots. Getting soil samples where you are planning on planting is one of the most important things you can do to ensure that you get the best results out of your food plots.

Getting soil samples where you plan on planting food plots will ensure the best results out of them.

When you get the results back from your soil samples you can lime them accordingly. You will get the best results out of them if you put out the recommended amount of lime on each one. When deer season rolls around you will be so glad you got the soil samples and have beautiful green food plots for the deer and they will attract more <a title="Favorite Deer Whitetail?
Spring is a great time to get out in the great outdoors and find deer sheds and improve your hunting property for <a title="Favorite Deer Whitetail?
That is a nice buck. Can you imagine seeing a trophy buck like that out in the woods?

We’ll the big bucks should be dropping their antlers soon, if they haven’t already. I haven’t been able to get out and do any shed hunting yet, but I plan on going soon. I sure would like to find old big boys rack. I plan on searching in food plots and on the trails leading to and from them. Having trail cameras can be a great way to know when the big boys drop their antlers.

Also it will be time to plant food plots soon. It’s time to get soil samples if you haven’t already. We did some burning the other day, it’s still not to late to control burn but time is running out.

Deer Hunting Big Bucks is all for safety, especially for young children. I wanted to tell you about a program that I just heard about, that is a great one for young children. It is a program that is for gun accident prevention. Any program that prevents even one child from being hurt in a gun accident is a good one to me.

When I was in middle school a boy that I went to school with was killed by one of his friends in an gun accident. I grew up around guns, my mother worked at a gun store when I was growing up. My friend being killed like that made me always be alert whenever I am around a gun.

This program is very good one, if you are interested in finding out more information about it you can call(800) 231-0752 or visit www.nrahq.org/safety/eddie. They have free materials for budget strapped schools and police departments. It’s just a great program.

They had a lot of big deer whitetail to be specific. I just love seeing the trophy bucks at the hunting shows, from all over the country. This show was mainly for turkey hunters and fisherman but I managed to find some deer hunting booths.

One of the booths we stopped at was West Kentucky Outdoor Adventures and we spoke with David Whitaker. They are a full service outfitter in Western Kentucky and can set you up on a hunt of a lifetime. Is you favorite deer whitetail? Then stop by their website kentuckywhitetailhunts.com and check out their great hunts they offer.

Another booth we stopped at was The Santuary Too. We spoke with Chris Collins and he had some unbelievable bucks on display that were harvested on their property. You can checkout their website at Ohiomonsterbucks.com. Man they grow some trophy bucks that are huge.

Another booth we stopped by was Kentucky Trophy Bucks, they are located in Christian County, Kentucky and they have some great hunting opportunities availible as well. They offer fully guided deer and turkey hunts. They have over 3000 acres of privately owned farms that primarily consist of croplands (corn/ soybean fields, crp fields, hardwood ridges and bottoms). You can check out their website at Kentuckytrophybucks.com.

The outdoors shows are always fun to go to especially the hunting shows. So if you get a chance to go to one in your area do it. You’ll have a blast! They had several drawings for some great prizes and great seminars and lots of great new products and a lot of outfitters to set you up on that hunt of a lifetime.

I ran across this article the other day and thought it was very interesting. How do you feel about hunting with dogs?

Hunters have many different opinions about hunting with dogs.

It seems everyone has different opinions on this issue. I have never been deer hunting with the help of a canine, but I bet it is very exciting. I have had the help of a tracking dog to help me recover one of the trophy bucks that I harvested, and without the dog I don’t believe the buck would have been recovered. I have heard stories about people killing big bucks deer hunting with dogs. The only issue I have with it is if the dogs run over on another mans property while he is in the stand, and messes his hunt up. Just this year I was in the stand and it was perfect time to see a deer, when all of the sudden I hear dogs coming my way. They eventually came by me and I wanted to shoot those dogs, I know plenty of hunters who would have but I just couldn’t do it since one of them had a collar. I was very frustrated that these dogs had messed up my deer hunting. But did that give me the right to shoot another mans dogs? I really don’t know, I wanted to but I just couldn’t do it.

Here’s the article I ran acros the other day.

The History Of Hunting With Dogs

Perhaps one of the oldest activities on earth is hunting with dogs. The history of hunting, as a consequence, is also one of the most complex and diverse. Hunting for food has always been something that human kind was obligated by nature to do, dating back to the very beginning of any civilizations known to the human kind. As a result of the above mentioned, there have been literally thousands of weapons as well as devices used for hunting purposes. The long and complex history of hunting is way more complicated than any other history in the world, as it dates back to the begging of the human race.

In order to fully understand this history, humans need to break down and study each era where hunting has been a crucial part of life. Although there are very exact timelines of when certain weapons or guns were manufactured, understanding the great importance of hunting should be done on a far broader scale. There is a lot more to the history of hunting than when the gun was initially created. Regarding hunting dogs, some were developed for waterfowl such as the retrievers because they have the ability to go into the water and bring back to the hunter the downed bird. Other dogs were created for upland birds, like the pointers or the setters.

Dogs played an important role in the development of the hunting history as it helped humans survive and even today they are used for hunting purposes. Although for a lot of people, hunting with dogs it is considered to be a sport, for many other people it means survival and putting food on the table. In the prehistoric periods, people hunted for food as well as leather for clothing and fur but as the society became less nomadic and agriculture expanded, the importance of the hunting activity diminished but didn’t disappear.

Even in the 13th there were a few laws regarding the fact that people were forbidden to hunt during the breeding season in order to insure the conservation of game animals. The gunpowder and the firearm are quite recent but bows, arrows, snares and traps have all been used to animals. The hunting dogs were created in order to point and “set” game birds thus allowing the handlers to toss a net over birds. The faster dogs were primarily used for chasing down game. Falcons and eagles have been used in the capacity of hunters. With the domestication of the horse, the human had a means of speed to get alongside big game such as the bison in the North American continent.

The early hunters used methods of digging pits as a game trap and running larger game off the cliffs as a means of survival. Nowadays the most common hunting methods are: still hunting, stand hunting, stalking and driving. Still hunting consists of tracking animals when it is known they are in the area but they are not sighted. Stand hunting is about taking a position and waiting for the game to go by. Stalking takes place when the targeted animal is spotted but out of the hunter’s range and he moves within that range while trying to stay out of sight. Driving is done when a group of hunters deliberately make noise in order to drive the animals in range or past armed hunters.

All things considered, the hunting activity played a major part in the development of the human kind and still is very important for some people not only as a sport but also as a primary way of survival in remote exotic areas.

Doing a control burn on your deer hunting property is a great tool for improving deer management.

Foggy Bottom Outdoors does a control burn for deer management.

There are many benefits from a control burn.

Doing a control burn is a great tool to improve deer management on your hunting property.

If you are looking to improve your deer management on your property you definitely want to consider a control burn. It can increase your quail population too. Fire helps to keep the sapling hardwoods under control but still allows the re sprouting in woods which are kept open with ample sunlight on the ground. This gives birds some protection from predators by allowing some cover to grow close to the ground. Fire helps removes dead vegetation on the ground exposing seeds and tender young vegetation there and allowing turkey and quail access to food and giving them easy movement through the new vegetation and plants. It also stimulates hard seeded plants and native grasses to sprout. Burning increases the production of seeds and grass plants on which turkey and quail and other birds and animals such as deer depend on through the year. So if you are looking to improve your deer management on your property you need to consider burning some parts of your property to improve your wildlife habitat.

Last Thursday we burned a few sections of our hunting property and it should really help the wildlife habitat this year. Every year we burn different sections of our property, usually the areas that need it the most each year.

You always need to check your local laws and regulations before doing a burn. Make sure that you never burn without getting a permit and abiding by all of the laws and regulations in your area.

When you burn you want a 25% to 50% relative humidity and winds no more than around 13 miles per hour, but you definitely need a little wind to make sure you get a good burn. Make sure you put in fire breaks to control the fire, make sure they are wide enough where the fire wont jump them. And you want to start at the fire break on the down wind side and burn into the wind. This way the wind will not carry the fire to fast, and the fire will have to burn into the wind, helping to keep the fire at bay.

Consider doing a burn on your property if you would like to improve the wildlife habitat, making your hunting property a better haven for wildlife. You will be glad you did come next spring when the forest floor is full of new grasses and plants that the deer will definitely be attracted to.
