Spook Spann emceed the Monster Buck Classic big buck contest.

The first annual Monster Buck Classic We Are Kansas hunting show was in Topeka this past weekend and it was awesome. We had a great time all weekend long and talk about a lot of big monster bucks.

These two monster bucks won first place for non-typical bow and gun.

Oh my gosh there was some absolute giants there. There was a big typical that should be the new Kansas State Record Typical whitetail with a gun(there are some questions about weather or not this buck was legally taken and I will just leave it at that until all the facts come out). He will have to be re-scored in a few days once the 60 day drying period is up and if the buck was legally taken it should be the new #1 typical with a gun in Kansas. He unofficially scored 198 7/8 net. The showroom floor was buzzing when it was announced that a potential Kansas State record whitetail had just been scored. There was a big non-typical that scored in 250′s gross and netted in the mid 240′s, what a stud. The lucky hunter said they had trail camera pictures of him and had been trying to get him with a bow for a few years but just couldn’t pull it off but this year he took him with a gun. He was an awesome buck for sure. There were so many awesome monster bucksit was unbelievable. The show had a lot of great celebrities also, Spook Spann, Travis “T-Bone” Turner, Lee & Tiffany, Pat & Nicole, Zack Cooper, Dan Thurston were all there. And it was so neat to get to meet them and talk deer hunting with them. They were all so nice and and easy to talk too.

Lee & Tiffany were there meeting people and signing autographs.

There were tons of great vendors with a lot of great products and a lot of great outfitters as well. It was just an all around great show if you love deer hunting. I am already looking forward to next years show. I was fortunate enough to meet the guys running the show and be able to work with them and help them before and during the show and it was a pleasure to meet and work with such a great group of guys and gals. They all worked so hard to bring a great deer hunting show to Kansas and they did just that and I was proud to be a part of it. And I can assure you that they are already working to bring you an even bigger and better show next year.

The first is a heavy-duty 2-gallon handheld sprayer with Viton™ seals and gaskets, an anti-clog filter, adjustable brass nozzle, and a 46-inch reinforced hose. This model is perfect for hard to reach spots.

Second, is the heavy-duty 4-gallon backpack sprayer, which also has all Viton seals and gaskets, a 100-percent leak proof cover, adjustable cone and fan nozzles, pressure relief valve, deluxe padded straps, and left/right hand pumps. The backpack sprayer comes in handy during early spring and late fall when the ground is wet and the ATV can tear up the land that the customer has worked hard to keep in good condition.

Next is the durable ATV sprayer in 15 and 25-gallon capacities. They’re designed for durability and superior performance with chemical resistant tanks and heavy duty 2.2 GPM Everflo® pumps. Both models mount directly to the ATV and feature a pressure gauge, a manifold for easy adaption of boom and boomless accessories, a Viton equipped 19-inch pistol grip dripless shutoff, and molded connectors with alligator battery clips.

The first is a Handheld Broadcast Spreader made of Mossy Oak commercial grade, water-resistant fabric. It features a calibrated flow rate adjuster, metal gears that are covered for the customer’s protection, and an easy on-off control that makes this spreader ideal for sowing seeds or lightweight fertilizer.

Next is the Push Broadcast Spreader which comes in 50, 85, 100, and 125-pound capacities. Continue reading »]]> I wanted to share with you this Q&A that has some great tips on deer hunting. Some of the tips are on scouting and now that the season is over it is a great time to be scouting your deer hunting spots. With all the leaves and green foliage mostly gone you can easily spot old rub-lines and travel corridors and you might even find a shed of one of those big bucks that has been so elusive on your deer hunting property. Mike has some great tips and I am going to use some of them to help me get a shot at that big buck this year.

Post season scouting your deer hunting property is a great time to locate big rubs.

Q: What time of the year do you do your scouting?

A: I’m scouting the entire year. From shed hunting in late winter and early spring to my time working up food plots throughout the spring, summer, and early fall. I do spend more time afield late summer and early fall just for the purpose of locating deer movement and determining which deer are using a particular area.

Q: Do you use trail cameras to help you scout?

A: I’m utilizing scouting cameras from mid-summer through the entire deer season. I am able to learn so much from these tools, which deer are using my hunting areas, what times they are moving, and their travel directions.

Q: Do you use food plots or other food type attractants?

A: I use a variety of food plots on my hunting property, from greens to grains. I want enough food plots and enough variety of crops in these plots to keep the deer using my hunting ground throughout the entire year. I also know that the work I put in on my plots is going to make the overall deer herd healthier.

Q: How do you hunt big bucks before the rut and early in the bow season?

A: During the early bow season, I want to put my efforts into patterning a big bucks feeding habits. Setting up between his bedding area and where he is feeding is key when their minds are on their bellies and not on the does.

Q: How do you hunt scrapes during the pre-rut?

A: I look for scrape lines – groups of scrapes along a travel corridor. This is an area that I need to pay attention to.

Q: Do you use scent control products?

A: I use scent control sprays, clothing, and keep myself as scent free as possible. I don’t believe that I can keep myself completely scent free, but I do believe in controlling as much of it as possible to give me a few more seconds when that big boy shows up down wind.

Q: How important is wind direction when deciding where to hunt?

A; Wind direction is key to stand placement. I will not hunt a stand unless the wind is perfect. You can beat a deer’s eyes and ears but you can’t beat his nose.

Q: Do you use attractant scents?

A: I don’t worry too much about attractant scents until we start getting into the rut phases of the hunt. Once I’m in these phases, I mainly use drags with estrous doe urine and often use a buck urine drag with it. Once I get to my stand, area I leave these drags downwind of my stand. When I use these drags I pay special attention to wind direction and look to cross several travel corridors where a buck might pick up the scent I have left.

Q: Do you use calls? If so, which ones and how much?

A: I always take a grunt call, an estrous bleat call, and a snort wheeze when I’m hunting. As I get closer to the rut, I also take a rattle bag with me. My rattle sequences last about a minute and I wait anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes before I do another sequence.

Q: What is your favorite time of the hunting season to hunt?

A: My favorite time to be in the deer woods is the pre-rut into rut, when the bucks are cruising for does and deer seem to be moving all day long. Can’t beat it!
