Trail cameras are a great way to watch your big bucks develop and help you figure out the best way to harvest them when it is time to go deer hunting.

Spring has sprung and after about a 200 day gestation period the does should be giving birth about now. Some does from the age of  two and a half if they are healthy and the winter was not to harsh they may have twins. Most of the time one will be a doe and one will be a buck. The fawns will grow quickly during June and July. And as the days become longer the bucks will start growing their new antlers. So now is a great time to get those trail cameras out and watch those trophies develop their antlers all summer long up until bow season starts. It’s fun to see their development at the different stages of growth throughout the year. Have you seen any deer growing their antlers yet? Their antler growth will be slow at first during the spring but once the long days of summer roll around the antler growth will begin to be much more noticeable. So get those trail cameras out and watch those bucks develop throughout the summer months. Trail cameras are a great way to learn more valuable information that can help you get that once in a lifetime buck once deer season rolls around.

Most of the bucks will shed their velvet before it is time to go deer hunting in September.

Have you ever seen a trophy buck in velvet when deer hunting? I have seen a few when I was deer hunting but I have never harvested a buck in velvet. I would love to harvest one of the big bucks we have on our property, but I would really like to get one with a bow in full velvet. When deer hunting early in bow season the bucks tend to still be in bachelor groups and are grazing, then when summer turns into fall they start to browse more.

The increased sunlight during the summer triggers growth hormones activated by the pineal gland in a whitetails body, that causes their antlers to grow. The pineal gland affects the deers summer and winter coat, breeding, when they grow their antlers and when they shed their antlers. The longer the days the antler growth increases. The velvet is skin tissue and veins that nourish the antlers during their growth. Usually about the end of August the bucks antlers are fully grown and the velvet is ready to peel. I sure would like to be able to see a buck actually shed his velvet. I have heard that once it starts peeling the hanging velvet irritates the buck and he thrashes trees violently to remove the velvet. I have also seen that alot of bucks actually eat the velvet once it is removed. I bet it would be really neat to watch a big boy shed his velvet.

Deer season will be here before you know it? Have you got you food plots in? There are some things you can do now to go ahead and get ready for hunting season. We always have a couple of work days at our deer camp during the summer, to get stands ready, work on food plots, cut shooting lanes, bush-hog and any thing around camp that needs to be fixed. Another thing you can do now is to go ahead and sight in that deer rifle, why wait until the last minute to do it? The less shooting you have on your hunting property the more secure your deer will feel. I just think it is best not to sight in your rifle on your hunting property, but if you must do it, do it  during the summer and not the weekend before deer season opens or during bow season. Those big bucks didn’t get big by being stupid, and the more shooting he hears the smarter he gets and more likely to go nocturnal.

I know I am already getting fired up for next deer season. I know it’s a long way off but I can’t wait to try and finally get that Pope and Young buck.

To qualify to be a Pope and Young buck the minimum score must be 125".

I’m always fired up about deer hunting. My neighbor took me fishing the other day and I had a great time but it just doesn’t compare to hunting big bucks for me. There is just something about getting after those mature trophy whitetails that gets in your blood. I am looking forward to filming hunts as well, I can’t wait to get some great footage of some rut crazed trophy whitetails going bonkers for some hot does.

I have got the fever for bow hunting pretty bad. Last year I harvested my first mature buck with a bow, bow hunting in Illinois and now not a day goes by I don’t think about getting my first Pope and Young buck. I am waiting to get the ten pointer I harvested bow hunting in Illinois back from the taxidermist to have him officially scored but I think he won’t be a Pope and Young buck, but he is a trophy in my book and I am very blessed to have had the opportunity to harvest such a beautiful animal.

When shed hunting a great place to start looking is around food plots and feeders.

I haven’t been able to go shed hunting this year but I would really like to soon. The big bucks should have dropped their antlers already. These are some before and after trail camera pictures I wanted to share with you, of one of the big bucks we have on our deer hunting property.

Trail cameras are a great way to know when the big bucks have shed their antlers on your deer hunting property.

Do you use a trail camera to help you figure out the big bucks on your deer hunting property? When you go shed hunting on your property where do you start out? I like to start in food plots and on trails, and near feeders and trails leading to and from them. Looking for that trophy whitetails rack is another fun part of deer hunting.

It will soon be time to plant those spring and summer food plots. Have you gotten your soil samples yet? Getting soil samples before you plant your spring and summer food plots and applying lime accordingly can improve your spring and summer food plots tremendously. I have seen plots that barely produced at all, but when soil samples were done and the correct amount of lime put out they showed great improvement and were lush and green! Get out and get those soil samples if you want to be sitting over a nice green plot come deer season.

Now that spring is here the does will be giving birth soon. After a gestation period of about 202 days. Some will give birth to twins usually one buck and one doe. During the summer bucks and does will be busy eating alot of their favorite foods in their region. Sometimes eating 10 to 12 pounds of food a day. During the summer they eat a lot of grasses, clover, alfalfa, and berries. As the days become longer the incresed daylight will cause a change in the bucks growth hormones causing his antlers to grow. I can’t wait to see the big bucks start growing their antlers.

That is a nice buck. Can you imagine seeing a trophy buck like that out in the woods?

We’ll the big bucks should be dropping their antlers soon, if they haven’t already. I haven’t been able to get out and do any shed hunting yet, but I plan on going soon. I sure would like to find old big boys rack.  I plan on searching in food plots and on the trails leading to and from them. Having trail cameras can be a great way to know when the big boys drop their antlers.

Also it will be time to plant food plots soon. It’s time to get soil samples if you haven’t already. We did some burning the other day, it’s still not to late to control burn but time is running out.

Deer Hunting Big Bucks is all for safety, especially for young children. I wanted to tell you about a program that I just heard about, that is a great one for young children. It is a program that is for gun accident prevention. Any program that prevents even one child from being hurt in a gun accident is a good one to me.

When I was in middle school a boy that I went to school with was killed by one of his friends in an gun accident. I grew up around guns, my mother worked at a gun store when I was growing up. My friend being killed like that made me always be alert whenever I am around a gun.

 I was able to get some good deer hunting footage, but I’m just not seeing the big bucks. 

I did get to see a beautiful sunrise. I hunted a huge food plot the first afternoon but the wind was whipping and I only saw two button heads.

 The next morning I hunted the edge of another food plot and I could see into a real thick area of hardwoods and pines mix. It was a very still morning and it was one of those hunts where I made way to much noise. It seemed like every little move I made I was making noise. I didn’t see a single whitetail, and I’m sure it was because of all the little noises I was making. I was trying so hard to be quiet but I just kept messing up. I dropped my range finder, ice had formed on the back of the seat I was in and kept falling on the metal platform, I had my camcorder on my tripod and it kept clanging against the metal stand. It was just one of those hunts. That afternoon I hunted yet another food plot and I had whitetails everywhere. I got some really good footage, I’ll put some on here that you can check out. I saw 9 whitetails that evening and I heard a few more that I never saw. All together it was a great couple of days of deer hunting but I just don’t know how to get close enough to see the big bucks, I think they are just to smart and have gone nocturnal. I just can’t pinpoint the big boy that we have on trail camera. He is so smart and elusive. I guess he didn’t get to 6 1/2 years old by being dumb. It is very humbling to be after the same trophy whitetail for several years, and never even see him while out in the field. I have only seen him on trail camera and most of the pictures of him are in the middle of the night.

My dad and I got to spend some time together in the woods, and the older I get the more I cherish the time we get to spend together. He recently was diagnosed with kidney disease, and seems to be in quite a bit of pain. I am planning on doing a post about my dad real soon and how he took the time to introduce me to the great outdoors and taught me everything I know about whitetails. I love you Dad!

At the end of last deer season some buddies and I started thinking about this deer season and we decided to do some public hunting. We planed a trip to go bow hunting in Illinois. I told my buddy to count me in when he first told me they were going. I had always dreamed about going on a trip like this. So I started preparing right away. I practiced like crazy all summer long with my bow. I replayed the scenario in my head over and over, drawing my bow at just the right moment and making a good clean shot on a big brute. And as we planned it we were trying to time it with the whitetail rut. When we arrived the weather was very warm and the big boys were laying low.The timing was a little bit early although the deer were starting to chase, but the first few days we just weren’t seeing the big bucks. But a cold front moved in on the last couple of days and the action was intense. My buddy saw ten big bucks chasing does but the big boy that presented him a shot was broken off just above his G1 on one side. He let him cruise by at about twelve yards. The next morning was cold and man I was pumped. I was bow hunting in Illinois and all the conditions were perfect.  I was able to rattle in a big ten pointer and my PSE Stinger put him down for the count. And this was on land open to anyone with a license. I would definitely recommend bow hunting in Illinois.

There are many great opportunities out there, to harvest some very nice monster big boys on land that is open to anyone in just about every state. We had to pay for a license and a room and food and gas. It wasn’t cheap but it was very reasonable for someone wanting a chance to bag a trophy buck.

Right after daylight I caught movement coming through the pines, it was a deer and she had two fawns with her. I was able to get some good footage of them. I was hoping one of them would smell pretty for one of our big bucks. But that was not the case, they fed around for a while, but no big boys showed up. I hunted until about 10:00 a.m.

  It was a great day to be in the woods, although I didn’t see any big deer. But I had to leave to go see my step-dad who is in the hospital with pneumonia. I had planned on hunting all day but I needed to go check on Pop, which is what my boys call him. He has had a rough week, but seems to be getting better. Get well Pop we hope you feel better soon. Next year maybe we can go hunting in Kansas like we have been talking about. A quick story about my step dad he harvested a beautiful trophy whitetail several years ago in Walton county in Georgia, and every time I tell him I’m going deer hunting, he asks me when are you going to get one bigger than him? As he is pointing to the monster buck hanging on his living room wall. One day Pop I’m going to get one bigger than him(hopefully)(fingers crossed).

I have been waiting on a cable to be shipped so I could download some of my hunts. The cable arrived today, and I figured out how to download them. So hopefully I can share some of my filmed hunts. My first video I downloaded is from an afternoon hunt the day after Thanksgiving. It’s short, and doesn’t have any big bucks in it, but I’m learning how to do it, and hopefully I will get better with the videography, the editing, the downloading, the filming hunts by myself, and all the details that make good hunting footage. I wish that I would have been doing all of this at the begining of the season, most of the best hunting footage is when the deer rut. 

I’ll try to get some better videos on here soon. Hopefully I can get some great hunting footage of some big bucks to share. We have several big deer on our club, I just hope to be able to share more filmed hunts this year especially if some of the does that were not bred come back into estrous making the big deer rut.

Filming hunting

I enjoy filming hunts and recently I have gotten the fever for filming hunting and whitetail bow hunting. Outdoor videography is something that I am very interested in learning more about. So what’s better than a little on the job training?

Also, today I ordered a cable for my camcorder that should allow me to download the footage to share with everyone.

I got in the stand and the action started early and was able to have a great afternoon of videoing and hunting. I am really getting the fever for bow-hunting and outdoor videography. I took my bow to test my archery skills, but I didn’t bring my arrows, I always forget to bring all of my supplies hunting. I was able to get a big fox squirrel  and seven whitetails on film, but the big bucks never showed up. I got some really good footage of the whitetails and squirrel. But it started raining while I was there, and rain and expensive video equipment just don’t mix. Especially when you don’t have the right equipment to protect your camera while filming hunts. I am already wanting to invest in a professional outdoor videography package. I found a really cool website that offers professional outdoor videography packages. You can go check them out at CampbellOutdoorChallenge. They have a great line of products, and they even have a competition you can enter and compete against other teams filming hunts. So be sure and go over and check them out.

The rain wasn’t too bad so I was able to keep the camera out and I just covered it up and still got some great footage. I had a wonderful eveing, I had several whitetails feeding in the food plot and they stayed around feeding for quite some time. It was fun catching them on video. I’m still trying to figure out how to download the video so I can share it with you. I am looking forward to getting some great footage in the near future. I’d like to do it for a living, who knows maybe someday soon I will.
