I am working on a story about this deer, and I wanted to tease you a little. Check out this brute! I’ll have the whole wonderful story and photos and a video to share in the next few days. Yesterday, after church I got to go do a little deer hunting. I hunted a great looking spot on the edge of some real thick hardwoods and a big CRP field that meets a huge corn field. I have been deer hunting quite a bit this year but I haven’t seen a lot of deer. I am in a rut, no pun intended. Yesterday was no different, I didn’t see the first deer. I saw a bunch of pick-up trucks but no deer. I know that I am hunting a great spot from all the sign I am seeing, it is wore out with whitetail sign. I am making sure to take all the steps for scent control and hunting with the wind in my favor it has just been tough for me seeing whitetails this year. I am frustrated but will not give up on this spot. Hopefully my luck will change, it just takes one hunt to score on one of those big bucks and change the whole deer season.

Last week my boys and I were outside and we saw some coyotes way down in the back of our pasture, so I went and got my video camera and filmed them.I was planning on going to Cabelas and getting a predator call and filming myself calling them in and shooting them. My boys like to play outside and it kind of freaks me out having coyotes so close by. Then yesterday as was was getting ready for church and my wife says there is a coyote in the front yard. So I made a b-line to my deer rifle and got some shells and snuck 0ut the back door and eased around the front of the house. And about the time I saw him he saw me and decided it was time to skeedaddle but it was to late. Not to brag but I was an expert marksman in the Army and a moving coyote at 70 yards was no problem. My 7mm short mag did a number on him! It was the first time I have ever been hunting in my Sunday best.

This coyote wasn't very Wiley, I shot him in the front yard.

I was lucky enough to go watch them practice and got to hear the new songs and man are they good! My highschool buddies Jimmy Hughes and Kelley Mayhue and the rest of the band can jam or they can slow it down and play some good ole country and even gospel. They have a song on the new CD called “Hank I Hope You Were Right” I think it is a hit for sure, and “My Gulf of Mexico”, “Gone and Faded”, “For Granted” “Help Me Up Again” they are all great. I really think if you like country, southern rock, or gospel you will really like these guys Fishing with Dynamite.

They are doing us a theme song for FoggyBottomOutdoors as well. Kelley Played me an acoustic version of it and it is going to be awesome. Fishing with Dynamite will be playing this Saturday in Loganville Georgia at The American Tavern to celebrate the release of their new Cd. Come on out and join them if you are in the area. Be sure to go checkout their website and new CD. You can just click on their ad on this page and it will take you right to their site.
Good luck, and congratulations guys on your new CD!

They find any excuse to give deer hunting a bad image. It does not matter to them that the money hunters give helps to preserve wildlife habitat, and with out that money the land would be bought and developed, meaning less and less places for wildlife to live. None of that matters to them.

Hunters bag deer for the hungry

“Deer hunting” brings to mind a number of images, such as a father and son spending a day together in the crisp air of late autumn.

One image that doesn’t come to mind is that of homeless people at a soup kitchen, at least not until the charity Hunt to Feed got its start three years ago.

As its name suggest, the Oxford-based charity donates venison to the hungry by way of the Connecticut Food Bank, according to its president, Joe Tucker, also of Oxford.

“Each deer produces 40 to 50 pounds of deer meat,” he said. The first year we donated 700 pounds of venison. Last year it was 1,250 pounds. And this year, we’re on track to go over a ton.”

He said that the program allows hunters in the state, including bow hunters, to donate the deer that they harvest to CFB, free of charge. “We raised funds through our banquet, which is used to pay the butcher — all the hunters have to do is to drop off the deer at one of our two certified butchers.”

Tucker, 48, who also owns and operates a deer pest management company, White Tailed Solutions, said that the meat is ground up by the butcher and used just like ground beef.

“Venison is a good source of lean protein,” said Nancy L. Carrington, CFB executive director. “It’s generally the more expensive portion of the meal that our member programs are looking for. The Hunt To Feed program has been good for us.”

CFB donates food to food banks, soup kitchens and the like in Fairfield, Litchfield, Windham and New Haven counties. Most of it winds up in Bridgeport, New Haven and Waterbury.Another benefit of the program is the thinning of the deer population, Tucker said. “In Fairfield County and along the shore, the state Department of Environmental Protection allows you to essentially hunt as many deer as you want,” he said, noting that deer — thanks to traffic accidents — is the most dangerous wild animal in North America.

He added that humans have unwittingly created ideal habitats of deer over the years. These include golf courses and wooded “open spaces” that boarder residential yards. Deer like wooded areas that receive some sun, and the plants that grow there.

“The Connecticut Food Bank requires that the deer is processed by a state-licensed butcher,” Tucker said. He said that after the deer is shot, the animal should be field-dressed immediately and transported to the butcher within one or two hours.

The two butchers participating in the program are the Large Game Company, Oxford, 888-3860, and Latella & Sons, West Haven, 932-3619. Hunters should make arrangements with them ahead of time, Tucker said.

But not everyone is happy with the arrangement between the CFB and Hunt to Feed.

“I think that this gesture is meant to build the image of the weapons enthusiasts,” said Priscilla Feral, president of the Darien-based Friends of Animals. “I see it differently. They’re not hunting to feed families. They’re out for trophies. The problem of hungry people is solved with jobs, not deer flesh.”

Well I just returned from a couple of days of deer hunting. The weather was unseasonably warm and although I didn’t see many deer it was a great couple of days being able to hunt with my dad and our good friend Randy. I don’t get the chance to spend the night at deer camp very often, so when I do it is relaxing and fun. My dad harvested a couple of does Monday evening. We have decided to take out quite a few does due to high number of does in our herd on our property. I think it will defintely help the buck to doe ratio. The whitetails are really coming to the food plots now and I am still holding out hope of getting a shot at a nice buck even though it is going to be tough. I plan on going back deer hunting as soon as the weather cools off a bit.

It’s not something we want to do, but it looks like it is going to happen fairly soon. One of the places we are considering transferring to is Kentucky. We recently took a three day trip to check it out and see if it is somewhere we would feel comfortable raising our children. My wife and I are now excited about the opportunity. Although, I must say we are scared about moving away from all of our family. It is a big decision that has a lot of stress that goes along with it. We are praying about it every day.On a different note I recieved an email of some trail camera photos of some really nice big bucks growing their antlers nicely. I wanted to show you a couple of them.

Being a Veteran of The United States Army is something that I am very proud of, and makes this day very special to me. I want to salute each and every one of our Veterans that paid the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy all of our freedom in the greatest country in the world. I think we take living in this country for granted some times and fail to realize the price that was paid to live here in the land of the free.

Rick over at Tails and Trails had a great post that gave me chills. Please go over and check it out.

To all of the men and women who have fought and died for our way of life thank you and god bless you. I will never be able to repay you for your sacrifices. And I will forever be in debt to you great Americans who fought and died for us here in The United States Of America, The Land of the Free.

When I think about what Memorial Day means to me, I think of all the freedoms that me and my family enjoy everyday, and the men and women who paid the ultimate price for us to be able to enjoy those freedoms, all because they were courageous enough to stand up and fight and die for this country, because they believed in what they were fighting for. God bless each and every one of you. I salute you on this day and every day that I have, and I will thank god for your sacrifices until the day that I die. God Bless the USA.

And I want to thank all of the men and women serving our country today. Please know that your sacrifices are appreciated, and always will be. God bless you!

I also think about my friends that I served in the United states Army with, most of which I have lost contact with. But I have not forgotten you and never will. Rock Steady! Bravo Troop 1st/11th Armored Calvary Regiment.

Also, I think about my grandfather who served in the United States Navy during World War II. I miss you Popo.

So on this day lets all be thankful for our many heros that gave their lives so we can enjoy ours and live happy in the Land Of The Free.
